In my opinion the man is a criminal and should be banned for life. He is not the type of person I think should be a role model for young people.
IF he is allowed back into the NFL I will quit watching NFL games.

I think I have to disagree here Chet.

For a couple of reasons.
First, if you really believe in your criminal justice system, then you have to believe that Vick has paid his debt. His record shouldn't be a permanent bar from employment. the fact that he is rich, and 'works' in an industry that generates giant revenue is sort of irrelevant. Unless you want all ex-convicts to live off of the government for the rest of their lives, then their record shouldn't be a deterrent except in fields where it is warranted, like the need to be bondable.

Second the NFL has set the precedent of allowing many people with criminal convictions to return to playing. There are more than a few players with violent crime records, and drug related felony arrests. I remember when he was arrested, a few of us talking about how he will never be forgiven by the fans, and that he would have been better off had he been involved in the death of a person.(like Ray Lewis.)

That said I am not a Vick fan, nor will I ever be. But it would be pretty hypocritical of the NFL to bar him, while allowing the return of players who continually violate the drug policies, and those with gang affiliated charges, those involved in the deaths of other people, rapists, spouse abusers... the list goes on. Sadly Vick only stands out because his troubles involved cruelty to animals. As a convicted criminal, and distasteful person, he is hardly a unique figure in professional sports.

Sure, some team is bound to be needing a janitor.

You make some very good points, however I think it is way past time for the NFL (this should go for all professional sports) to weed out the criminal element. After all they are teaching kids it's ok to go out and commit crimes and still get paid millions of dollars to be a professional athlete. How wrong is the thinking there?

I agree, but unless the league is willing to do it , for all their miscreants, they can't do it for Vick.

this won't change until the public at large actually demands it. this would mean a boycott.

I think the commisioner has already started moving in that direction. Nothing is going to change overnight but as examples there were several high profile suspensions last year and teams are starting to wake up and realize that these guys are not in thier best interest. Change is coming in the NFL and I for one am glad to finally see it.

I would reinstate him right after he is covered in bacon and thrown in a pit with some of his dogs for pay-per-view.

Now thats justice!

Do we want the likes of a thug like this to a "Sports Hero" for our children...
Should these thugs have the luxury to do what they want and then just return to "normal"

I think all professional sports should tighten up and get back to the standards they once were famous for

He should be sent to the Detroit Lions and forced to donate half of his salary to the ASPCA.

Who says an NFL player's job is to act as a role model for young people?

My sons's role model was ME. They weren't trying to figure out how to be a grown-up man by studying morons who throw a ball for a living.

An NFL player's job is to play football, win games, make headlines, rile up fans, get busted up, retire in pain and open a car dealership. Frankly, I don't care WHO plays in the NFL... they're probably ALL a bunch of thugs who believe the rules don't exist for them. Celebrity = privilege.

Besides, this discussion doesn't even matter... Vick says he's got a construction job lined up when he gets out, and is not asking to be reinstated. All this "he should be SENT" business sounds like you think that NFL players belong to the league, like cattle, and that they cease to exist when they're not playing. Actually, they're just human beings.

And if you imagine that professional sports were once famous for some kind of high moral standard, you should go read a book on Babe Ruth or Mickey Mantle. That was nothing but the usual American eyewash, boys... even then, they were alcoholic whoremongers, just like everybody else with too much money and free time.

He committed a crime, got caught, went to jail (which is more than any NON-famous animal abuser in your home town ever did, I'll tell ya). When he gets out, he should be able to make a living any way he can. You want morals? Go to church on Sunday instead of watching football.

Good question and I guess I'm kind of "on the fence" with it.

On one hand, he's not someone that I have much respect for, if any.

On the other hand, I'd love to see some huge and painful sacks. :?

Michael Vick is a despicable human being, I grant you that. As a dog lover, I'm horrified by what he has done. But even ex-cons have the right to work.

The underlying question is whether any professional athlete should be considered a "role model" or "hero" to children or anyone else. In the grand scheme of things, they do not really contribute to society in a material way. Furthermore, as has already been mentioned here, many of them are less than paragons of virtue. Encourage your children to admire doctors, teachers, police officers, firefighters, but not athletes or other entertainers.
