While not directly attributable to English logician William of Ockham, this paraphrase of a statement in his writings is widely known as "Occam's Razor."

For example, in one of Solid Body's quotes above, there is most certainly observable physical "law." But there is no evidence of anything that could be called "divine order," (and no reason to use the emotionally-charged word "ruled" to describe how such law affects the universe), so assuming such a thing is an example of increasing the number of entities required to explain the universe. Because you cannot know the existence of such a thing as divine order, you cannot reject chance and coincidence as the cause of any effect.

This whole world would be less crazy, violent, splintered and dangerous if everyone applied Occam's Razor to their decision making.

SC , bro , i took the third sentence out of a much larger context , what i meant by divine order my not be the correct use of that term , divine order as i meant it there , is like our solar system , how can i explain this , in our solar system we are the third planet from the sun barring some unforseen event we will always be the third planet from the sun .

Gotcha. i read "divine order" as meaning something like "an intelligence that put everything in line."

But if you remove that phrase.... does the existence of physical laws negate chance?

For example, my little brother drowned in the neighbor's pool when he was 15. It's true that anyone who fills their lungs with water will suffocate and die. But it's complete chance that on that day, he accidentally sucked enough water into his lungs to kill him.

That's all I'm saying: yes, the universe runs on immutable physical principles: lions bite, water boils at 212 degrees, you can't breathe water. but none of those things remove chance and coincidence from the course of events.
