I read that it was bought at a pawn shop and had engravings like a mandolin would. Then I read something about Billy Gibbons having to do with changing the rosewood neck to maple.

Stories like this will end up nowhere because people make things up about legends.

If you are looking for "that" sound just remember that pretty soon you will move on and do your own thing so try and build your guitar to be flexible with other sounds too.

it's not really that i am trying to build a guitar to get his sound, really some one's tone is mostly in their fingers and not all the equipment. i was just wondering cause i prefer ash and i was wondering if thats what he used too.

I think that's his guitar "Lenny" that you're talking about.

And I think Number 1, the one that looks like he dragged it down a gravel road for three miles, is alder. I'm not 100% sure though, but from looking at pictures that's what it looks like to me.

Here is a set of books that cover SRV's life & music, they do go a bit into his equipment.

Stevie Ray Vaughan - Caught in the Crossfire
Roadhouse Blues: Stevie Ray Vaughn and Texas R&B
Guitar World Presents Stevie Ray Vaughan

okay, i check those out.

here's another question kinda about number one but mostly just about guitars that are from that time period. how do they get so beat up? i noticed most of number ones finish is missing and i have seen pictures of other guitars from that era that have lost tons of finish. did they guitars just have a thinner finish back then? i just reliced my strat and the finish was really thic and hard to get through, but it seems like srv just wore right through the finish easily.

thanks
nikko

The older guitars have a nitrocellulose finish, (lacquer), which dries fairly hard but doesn't really hold up well in the long haul. Some really fine, very expensive instruments, like a $10K+ violin might have, what is called a French polish finish. This may be either a lacquer or shellac base which is rubbed on in very fine coats until the proper sheen is acheived.

Most of the newer Fenders use a variation of urethane which holds up very well, (its what they paint stair steps with). As I understand it, Fender recently started finishing their guitars using a process that leaves a very thin coat allowing the sound of the wood to come through while providing a high level of protection. You'll notice the wear marks on older guitars where an arm constantly rubs on the body and such. This doesn't happen so much on newer instruments that have these new finishes.

i dunno i have to wonder about SRV. in some footage, you'll see the big sparkly "SRV" logo on the no. 1, and then in other footage, the logo will be almost non-existent. no lie, look around at pics and videos. well at least i don't think i'm mistaken

I have an ash Stewmac and consider it my acoustic. It has a lot of sustain and fullness to the sound. Could also have something to do with the DucBucker on the bridge but I still think it is mostly the wood.
