Hi Anarchy in the Forums: your MIM Strat will have a polyester finish on it. A good idea not to mix one type of paint with another, so look out for aerosols (or other) of polyester based paint. Don't confuse polyester with polyurethane: two different things...

I would also suggest though, that your guitar is well cured, so you should be able to get away with some kind of acrylic. I would test spray a small area under the pickguard, where no one can see, and see what happens before tackling anything visible.(this advice applies no matter which paint you buy including the polyester.)

If you have never done this before, get some scrap to practice spraying on. Spray bombs dry fast. So you want to get it right your first pass on the guitar.

If you want a graffiti look, you'll want to use rattle cans. There are several brands suitable for your needs in your local hardware store(Home Depot,Ace,Lowe's etc.)

Ceri is right... as usual. Me and a friend and I tried a similar paint scheme on his MIM P-bass, and used the wrong type of spray paint. It bubbled and blotched and didn't stick well. Now it looks like dired bood. (Which is kind a cool.) That may not be what you're going for though.

Oh man, how did you do it? I've been trying to get that dired bood finish for such a long time! It IS kinda cool...

It was some 3M wood stain spray paint, cherry I believe.

Tunred out we grabbed the wrong can off the shelf. My friend was so pissed that it wasn't sticking, so he kicked the body into the grass, which left an odd texture to it, and now it just looks... interesting. We were also 15, and not too familiar with proper guitar painting techniques.
