I don't want to turn this into a Mayer thread but:

-Rene Martinez (Stevie Ray Vaugh's guitar tech) calls him the "...only player that can make the guitar sound as good as it should sound..."

-Eric Clapton calls him the next slowhand

-He's won 7 Grammys

He's a good guitar player. No doubt. But I think what separates a lot of guitarists when it comes to John Mayer is that he's not really rock n' roll. What I mean is that he isn't this dirty gritty guitarist like clapton, hendrix, srv, etc. Although he shouldn't have to be, it's a noble effort to try to combine blues and pop, but there is a danger to that. I guess what I'm saying is that John Mayer is a good guitarist and he shouldn't have to be like some other guitarist, but just because he's a good doesn't mean he's in the same league as the ones before him. He's got a lot of years ahead of him though, so who knows.

I had a band teacher back in Jr high school that said "you don't just add hot water and stir, you have to practice" If I learned nothing else in band it was worth it. Those words have stayed with me and I have applied that thought process to many other areas of my life.

In this world of "click on demand" I feel most people are not willing to put in the effort and give up when they realize how much work it takes to be good at most things. It takes real dedication and more importantly passion to excel at anything. Lets be realistic, for the most part (not all) the generations following us are overweight button pushing spoiled brats. There are somethings money or charge cards just can't buy.

On the other hand there are a lot more distractions now than when hendrix, page and the like were up and coming. It wasn't uncommon to spend hours practicing day after day. There wasn't much else to do back then. There will be other greats, but I don't think there will be as many.

I haven't read one name who's material i find interesting. Even the mighty srv i cant say i'm familiar with. I never saw the need to become aquainted. Is that because i'm the eternal 70's man? No i wasnt of music appreciating age for a lot of that decade. I'd offer that its simply the fault of a MTV like music industry. Whats safe, What will sell, What will keep the profit graphs on the rise. Modern music is lousy with profit based songwriting, publishers influencing artists. Its ridiculous no one would of told van gogh what to paint, he'd of hacked their ear off instead of his own. That attitude is very prevelant in modern music 'I'll do what you ask, just make me rich'. It's all i hear on records.
Couple that with the fact that most modern artists have about as much songwriting ability as my cat. Their either trying to emmulate 60's era clapton or playing 100 notes per second with no thought to melody. The MTV generation really worked a number on what we love folks.

I'd suggest if your after good music your far better to trawl myspace's unsigned acts. You find a good band every thousand or so.

They are entitled to their opinions - and Grammys for crap don't count.

Passable guitar player.
Can't sing his way out of a paper bag.
Toxic attitude.

Maybe if he spends a few years as a sideman in a good band (like Clapton and Page in the Yardbirds and/or Bluesbreakers or Walter Trout with Canned Heat) he might grow up into somebody worth listening to.

Emphasis on "grow up".

What about that guy, Daryl Brohmel... or something like that? Clapton thought he was awesome, his career never took off, and now he's playing rythm/2nd lead for Clapton.

If anything, turn off the radio, step away from your tv, and find something new. There are tons a great "new" guitarists out there. You just have to find them. Muse for example.

What's funny about this is the concepts sound like an old man, but the writing sound like a young guy.

I mean, a 15 year old telling those kids to get off his lawn? "And that music... why, it's just NOISE! Doesn't take any talent to bang away at those electric guitars, making sounds like a dying cat! Now, in MY day... the big bands, the crooners... now THAT took talent!!!"
:^D

As for John Mayer, you should watch him working with Herbie Hancock in the documentary "Possibilities," and then honestly tell me he's merely a "passable" guitar player. Or if you, personally, could keep up with the musicians in that room for more than, say, 20 seconds. (Mayer does credit to himself, while Trey Anastasio gets schooled.)

Heck, I hated Mayer until I heard some of his Trio work.

I agree. His live work on the Trio album is good, but I can't get into his studio albums.

Hey FenderHeads-

Mayer is Mayer....He's not the second coming or a cross breed between Hendrix and SRV- I respect his playing though I dont own a Mayer track to speak of. His "Trio" Stuff is very good. Rene Martinez and Clapton know what they are talking about-

As for mention of Doyle Brahmhall II- He's with ARC Angels- a band he started back in 93 with Charlie Sexton , and SRV's rhythm section- VERY GOOD BAND- They are back together again.

That's what his name is! I saw him playing with Clapton on some Palladia show. It was odd, because he was playing a left handed Strat, strung right handed, but playing left handed. Or so it seemed. That I found to be quite impressive.

Hey Darkly-

Yeah..he's good...so is Charlie Sexton. I guess when you learn directly from Stevie Ray Vaughan as a kid....you can get some serious schooling. Doyle's Dad (Also Doyle) wrote many songs with SRV.

As for the original post- I do agree that much of todays airplayed POP has pushed the guitar out of the spotlight - This happened in the 80's and in the late 90's . Keyboards and Beat Boxes took center stage. Today, the guitar is more or a rhythm instrument then a melody maker. My wife is a major "Blue October" fan. I have seen several of their concerts with her and though their music isn't my cup of tea...they are respectably good. I just wish their guitarest would let it rip a bit...but their music isn't suited for it. I think thats the key- Todays pop is not suited for lead guitar- its more lyric and dance focused- IMHO.

So I sit back...listen to my Govt. Mule, Blues, and 70's rock and let myself go. Things will change...who knows..maybe John Mayer is part of that change. We will see-

I know what you mean. A few years ago there was a point where a lot of bands were bringing back the guitar sound. I heard about Doyle from MTV2! Heck, even Santana made a comeback in the hip-hop community. I agree that it has faded away again. Then again, I don't really listen to "popular music" and stay away from the radio. :D

Tell me he doesn't have serious guitar chops.
