My band are trying to persuade me to get a guitar synth so I can do things like sax, brass stabs and strings... there's some amazing Roland demos on YouTube.

But they're pretty pricey and I'm a guitarist! Anyone here actually played guitar synths? Easy to play? Easy to set up? ANy alternatives to pricey Rolands??

Thanks,
Paul

the Roland units sound great, but for an alternative you could try a guitar-to-midi converter like this one :

These run about half of what the Roland units cost.

scour some pawnshops, there might be an old Roland collecting dust.

I wanted a guitar synth forever and shopped ebay until i found a Roland GR-20 at a decent price.

I LOVED IT... for about a week.

I play in a hip hop band and wanted to add strings and other things into the mix to make it sound as full as possible. We only have a guitar, bass and beatbox for the backing music in my bad so I was looking for an easy way to add more sound to us.

I have no clue why i fell out of love with it so fast. I didn't like the bulky pickup on my guitar (roland gk-5) for one thing. I also didnt take the time to set up the sensitivity of the midi pick up very well.

The GR-20 has some great sounds on it, and also some very cheesy 80's sounding synths as well.

If I were you I would try my best to play one before I bought one. They are pricy. The youtube video examples are awesome and they make it look super easy to add the GR-20 to your setup.
