I quit about 12 years ago now and I agree on all three counts. I noticed long ago that when I'd go to restaurants with smoker friends, I'd comment on things like delicate spicing, subtle nuances and so on and they'd be saying "next time, let's go to some place where they know how to flavor food."

I also view having to go through smokers' alley (aka all the smokers lined up outside my employer's entrance) as running the gauntlet ... I just hold my breath and go for it. Thankfully, the company finally started enforcing the rule that they're all supposed to be off in the corner of the parking lot. But on rainy days, they all stand right under the canopy leading to the door and (long standing policy), management (all non-smokers!) is as a matter of tradition reluctant to come down on them.

I have to admit that I love Burbank's (CA) law about no smoking within 20 feet of doors and windows of buildings open to the public. It makes walking through "Beautiful Downtown Burbank" a pleasant experience! I try to remain tolerant (as an ex-smoker myself), but I find that I now fully support laws like Burbank's. Okay for there to be a smoking area, but it should NOT be where non-smokers have to smell it or walk through it.

As for weight gain -- well I was never Mr. Athletic but I was maybe 5 pounds overweight and reasonably fit for most of my adult life. After I quit, I've turned into the Blob That Ate LA. To be fair though, shortly after quitting, I was promoted from a job that involved all sorts of movement during the day and a roughly 10 hour work day to a management position where I'm sitting motionless at a desk for up to 14 hours. I know I "should" hit the gym or at least walk ... but with maybe 3 hours between getting home and going to bed ... I don't. Weekends being moderately active is not proving to be enough.

Still, almost everyone I know who's quit has gained noticeable weight and off the top of my head, I'd say less than half ever managed to take most of it back off. That though leads to my final disclaimer: most of the people I know are age 40+ where it would be harder to take weight off anyway.

The reason why food starts to taste better is because smoking kinda blocks some of the tastebuds. Many of the cooks and workers in tha canteen at my work smoke and because of that the food does have to much salt in it because the cooks can't taste it until there is to much of it. But the food here has gotten a little better after they banned smoking on the factory area, I think that some of the cooks used the ban as a reason to quit smoking.

I got the zyoban prescribed. As the Racehorse said the doctor warned me of dreams and nightmares. Told me also to carry on smoking and that they will drop off as the drug starts to work.

As Jello Biafra said 'DRUG ME'.

This should complement your insomnia perfectly! Stick with it man.

Congrats on your first week. Keep it up!

Yes ex-smokers are worse than non smokers about pointing out the stench the cigarette smokers have on them, and the smell of the actual smoke makes me want to vomit when I am around it.

Soon you will start noticing a difference in the way food tastes.

Good Job to everyone who has beat the Demon Tobacco! I've been smoke-free since October of '07 after almost 40 years. It was the Chantix that made me a quitter. I started the treatment before all the hullabaloo concerning suicidal tendencies and other scary side effects. I had problems with vivid dreams; I took care of that by dropping the evening dose.

And I think half the battle was psychological; Chantix is supposed to be a 14-week program, but I quit completely after 3 weeks, I think because I really wanted to.

Reportedly, they have reached $11 per pack in the two big train stations in downtown Chicago.

That, e-friends, at a pack a day is the price of four new Fender MIMs in A year![/b][/u]

Do it guys, get all the help you need and quit. As I said I smoked for ten years and quit 26 years ago, I quit and never looked back. Find yourself a good reason to quit and hang on it. Good luck guys. 8)

Be careful with those "occasional" butts. That's usually how you start again. Drinking without smoking is without a doubt the hardest thing to do. Not only is the association there, but your willpower is at an all time low. Good luck to everyone on the wagon and also those who may have fallen off. It's never too late to quit.
