So my new cat was born today. And her name is Layla. She had me on my knees for a good part of the morning. The name only seemed fitting. She is only a few hours old.

I like the name......I have five cats of my own......all orphans as kittens that people abandoned.

Congrsts on electing to be the life-companion of a wee creation. Big responsibility.

May you have many fine times together.

[quote="bmcmillin"]So my new cat was born today.

Reminds me of the coat on "Baby", the last cat to live with us. My wife and I love cats but the allergy index has reached its peak both with her and others in her family. I also believed that I was becoming sensitized. Had that not been the case, when Baby passed in 2002 the next would have been a Maine (you know)....

Our current and likely last companion is a two year old Yorkshire Terrier.

Doc, sorry to hear about Baby. But I understand the allergy deal. It is weird how people are allergic to cat dander but not so much dog. Weird.

We lost Tuffy a very old and sick yellow tabby early this week. Never thought how much I would miss him because it actually belonged to my neighbor who threw him out when he found out it had feline immune difficiancy along with his brother whom we had to put to sleep because he was bleeding to death internally.

But it really hurt to see Tuffy go after so many years of caring for him. He didn't want to die and was alert to the last minute as his body shut down trying to preserve the brain and heart.

You are right our companions are more than just pets and I hope my "Kid Rock" wannabe neighbor finds that out someday and all the other people that dispose of their pets.

The allergen is likely not the dander but the salivary protein carried in it. I understand that cats lick themselves to wet down their coats as a cooling mechansim through evaporation. Yorkies have true long hair and are hypoallergenic. We keep him puppy cut for easier maintenance.
