I like to think multiple guitars are justified under certain conditions, and here is why- If your guitar collection is at an opposite proportion to your ability, it can lean you into one of two categories. If you can play extremely well with true emotion, chops, and overall technical ability, it would be justified to own them. Basically you would be a phenomenal guitarist sculpting your songs with your tools. If you aren't in that highly regarded professional status category, you become more of a hobbyist or even a collector. So the basic logic is either, "Michelangelo didn't paint the Sistine Chapel with one color" or "I'm a collector". Either way, the best someone can respond to that answer would be "...oh. Ok."

Although I do some things the players would do, like have very tonally diverse guitars and some that remain in alternate tunings, I am more of a collector because I don't play live gigs and I'm not as good as my collection implies. I also spend more time looking at guitars and deciding if there will be mods or not.

... So to answer the first question- "Because I'm a collector" :D

I enjoy playing different guitars on different days. It almost depends on what mood im in. If no other reason comes to mind, it always pays to have a back up guitar on stage if your electronics were to fail or something were to completely malfunction.

Hmm--gigging musicians need back up guitars.
Guitarists whose dream it is to be a gigging guitarist can use backups.

If you want to be a stdio/session guitarist--multiple types of guitars can be a necessity.

I have more than one--and they're all different--and that's why I have each one of them--they all offer something different from the others--it's not cosmetic differences, but tangible ones for sound.

Anyone who makes that criticism needs to look at what they own. I own 3 pairs of shoes--each for a different purpose--well the same goes for my guitars.

I think the question is, if you're fortunate enough to be able to afford more than one guitar then why wouldn't you?

Guitar collecting is amazingly popular and people have different reasons for collecting... some (like me) don't consciously collect but just pick up a new guitar every few years and never get around to selling any of the 'old' ones! Some have 3 or 4 guitars, some have 25... 50...80 :o
Some collect as an investment, some just love the art and beauty of them, some love the history of old guitars and some play each one regularly.

I't's a luxury to have a choice of guitars to play, but it's a great pleasure - enjoy it! If you love collecting guitars, pop over to my forum to meet others who collect too! (see footer)

Why have multiple cars or motorcyles? Because you can!

Stimulate the world economy - buy more guitars!! 8)

All of my guitars have different pickup configs (or acoustic) so they all sound different.
I also keep one in a different room, so I can have a guitar at hand when I feel inspired.

Yes, you can pretty much get by with one pair of shoes, but who do you know who only has one pair of shoes? Probably not too many people...

I got one pair of shoes... and only one guitar.

does me fine. =]

But not starting an argument here.
just some input.

I used to have that question too, but now I realise that people who play professionally or are very advanced players, need more than a couple of guitars, because they want specific sounds for each melody/song they're playing.

I don't buy expensive cars, clothes, homes, electronics etc... I live within my means. I have no debt, seriously, none.
I don't drink hardly at all, I don't do drugs, or smoke cigarettes.
I like guitars. I REALLY like guitars. I like playing guitars. Different guitars. With different sounds. With different feels.
5 acoustic guitars
1 lap steel slide guitar
4 bass guitars
2 semi-hollowbody electrics
16 solid body electrics
Is 28 too many? Hell No!!!

Let's see--this is more than I have--but ultimately I see this as a good combination-

1-Solidbody with humbuckers
2-Solidbody with single coils
(As opposed to humbuckers with coil splitting--it's just not the same)
3-Semi hollow
4-Archtop
5-Acoustic 6
6-Acoustic 12
7-Electric 12
8-Bass
9-Resonator
10-Something set up for slide/open tuning
11-Classical

On another board someone challenged us to list only 5--I couldn't do it--and I whittled it down from the above, but I couldn't get to 5.

Here's the reason to have lots of guitars.

IT'S FUN!

That's all the justification you need! Of course, there are different visual looks, different sounds, etc., but seriously one doesn't need to justify their purchases on any other basis than that it makes them happy.

Besides, if you only have one or two, you can't take a photo like this:

Image

Everyone should just buy what they can afford and what makes them happy, and not worry about what anyone else does.

PS-- yes those are my guitars, as of a couple years ago

PPS-- although some of those guitars and amps are gone now, I now have more, net, than is in the picture

I'm happy with nine guitars

Clapton Strat
Am Delux Strat
Modified Squire Strat
Hamar Daytona (fake Strat)
Am Tele
L.P. Standard
61 reis SG
ES 335
Ovation model 1111 (would make a better canoe paddle than a guitar)

So why would a no talent hack like me have more than one guitar? The burn doesn't stop until it's quenched and each one means something to me. And they get played..........Often, just badly.

I just bought a Tele, and it is completely different from any other guitar I own. Things like this are great reasons to have more than one. Plus it's helpful in the band situation: Tele for this song, Strat for that one, Dean for that one etc. Another benefit being everyone could show up to my house without their instruments, and we could still practice. :D

The point of having more than one guitar is because I can be able to have more than one guitar
