I have over 5 guitars and one my friends told me that i was crazy and that i only needed one and i got to thinking that i barely use my other guitars and my Stratocaster is basically me main guitar besides me Gibson j200.

So what is the point because i was saving up to get a Gibson Double Neck Guitar that Jimmy Page uses and now i am just thinking of saving that money for something bigger like maybe studio equipment.

Well, I for one, think you should have as many of anything you want ..It is your decision... Usually people that make judgments are lacking something themselves.. just my opinion So, get the double neck and the recording
stuff

:D :D

I go through phases as to which guitar I play most so I like to have a few of them. Lately for me it has been My Telecaster's more.

In my opinion (which anyone may openly disagree with), every guitar brings out something different in the player. I think it's good to have different guitars to bring out different aspects of your playing. It may even be the same model but there might be something about it that just gives you a different vibe.

Guitars are like tools...why do mechanics have so many tools and wrenches? Because different jobs require different tools. They are also like shoes...Yes, you can pretty much get by with one pair of shoes, but who do you know who only has one pair of shoes? Probably not too many people...That being said, I stopped at 17 guitars because I started to run out of floor space and don't waana get wall hangers

Interesting topic to think about. Technically I like a main guitar and a back up set up similar for live shows. So that's 2, an acoustic is a whole other beast so that's 3 and I still like to keep a dual humbucker heavy sounding guitar around for when I decide to relive my hair metal days. That's 4.

Yeah 4 is all that's necessary for me............... but I still have 6

There are plenty of reasons to have more than one guitar:

Hospitality. If someone drops by, it's nice to have extra guitars so you can jam together.

Variety. I have three guitars: a Squier Standard Stratocaster, a Fender Classic Players Jazzmaster Special, and a Jasmine ES31C dreadnought acoustic. My next acquisitions will likely be a Squier Vintage Modified Telecaster Custom and an ES-335 copy (e.g. Jay Turser JT-133). Each guitar has a distinct voice, and each one adds a unique color to the sonic palette.

You can have different tunings. I have one tuned down a half step. I'd like to have another just for weird tunings. I'm not going to do that to my Squier everytime I want to play Black Crowes or whatever weird tuning is out there.

I think investing in studio gear is probably better if you plan on being productive. I already bought Line 6 Riff Tracker and don't plan on buying anything else until I create a decent song with it. It's good enough and only set me back $200. A lot better than spending 3 large on Pro Tools for my purpose.

I too go through phases of playing one more than the others, however I do still go back to the whole collection. I'm currently favoring my Telecaster, but I did jam on my Lester last night for the first time in a month or so. Even if I didn't play one of my guitars I still won't get rid of it.

Actually, I have a Epi LP that I got in 2007....haven't played it in about a year. I tried selling it 6 months ago and put it on CL, but there were no takers (besides someone from Nigeria that was going to give me double $ for it) so I decided to keep it. It doesn't take up much room stored in my office so I'm not motivated to let it go. Too bad someone doesn't use it though since it is a pretty good player. I figure that eventually I'll find some kid that can't afford a guitar but really wants to play (someone who will take good care of it and appreciate it) and I'll give it to him/her.

well... if anyone can come up with a truly compelling reason I'd appreciate it if you'd put the case to mrs mondo!

I think three guitars of a player's preferred type would be good, plus extras such as steel- or nylon-string acoustics or archtops if you want something that your main guitar type just won't do.

Everybody needs a #1, and that requires a #2 as backup. The third one I like to think of as a "floating" guitar... something with investment potential, perhaps, or that can be swapped for the #2 if you want to hang onto it as a player. Anyway, something you can turn over every so often to satisfy GAS. Naturally, it's that third guitar I'm having trouble with at the moment. Ah, well. I'm still enjoying my other two, perhaps I should fake a breakage or something..

This is an interesting topic, and I'm not looking to hijack it or change the topic but it got me wondering something. What about owning multiple amps? Right now, I'm more interested in acquiring more amps than guitars. Do you have multiple amps???

Yes. As with guitars, different gear for different applications, if one's circumstances call for it. Many may require only one versatile amp and guitar.
