Wow...as part of my electronics technology program, I have an internship at a Computer Recycling Center which takes all kinds of electronics gear...I show up today...one of the local radio stations dropped off a bunch of stuff for us to recycle, reuse, or dispose of...

So I got a couple FREE OTARI MX-5050 2-Track mastering reel-to-reel tape decks...Worst case scenario I figure I will get at least one of them working...Pics to follow, in case you don't believe me, but first I got to eat cause these things weigh more than you'd think since they are rack mountable, industry reel-to-reels...I used to use these exact same tape decks when I was doing production work as an FM DJ...

Sounds Good
Advice - If someone should ask for the blue handled pliers which are in fact red , be very, very careful , never assume it's them , question everyone , better to be safe than Don King

in my original message made it unclear as to whether or not I got rid of the gear?

I am not getting rid of the gear, I got the gear someone was getting rid of for free. I got 3 of these Otari MX-5050s sitting on my living room floor...In fact I just forgot one was there a few minutes ago and smacked the h  ll out of my knee when I walked into it...

All 3 power up and the motors work, but I don't have any 1/4" reel-to-reel tapes to check the heads, but they supposedly all work...I am going to use one in my home studio, and then depending on whats left, I may keep them for spare parts, or perhaps sell them or donate them to a fellow musician...

Nice find. I have an old 1950 tube powered Voice of Music reel to reel tape recorder. Any idea what it is worth? I'm kind of scared to plug it in to find out if it works. It's been in the family before I was born.

Hope you enjoy yours. Seems like you have the room to keep them but in this day of smaller houses and digital recording I have thrown out a lot of stuff that might be worth money.

Thanks!

Off the top of my head, I am not sure what your reel-to-reel may be worth, but I found this site in searching for a service manual:
http://www.analogrules.com/index.html
...or just do a Google search as there are a number of analog recording forums out there, as I did not know such forums even existed until doing some research for these Otari's...

All of our Electronics at the University went to recycling but the center was not allowed to sell it off or give it away. It had to be taken apart and the plastic, precious metals, and othe components had to be destroyed and recycled not reclaimed as whole items that was a big no no and real big no no with the Goverment own stuff they had to be certified destroyed and removed from the system  Recycle meant materials not reclaim items they were different. Its all paper work and a pain in the neck.

WELL...

Look! I have an internship through my college, but this recycling center is not a school affiliated entity. These items were dropped off for us by a local business and they gave us permission to either recycle, repair/refurbish, dispose of properly, and/or do what we want because all they were just going to do was throw these functional items in the trash...I just got the things today, so I don't know what I am going to do with them other than try to fix them for myself? OR NOT?
