Had a Marshall 2x12 Combo almost 30 years , never read mag's , visited Forums , got rid of it down the Dump , bought AVT100 , still tearing me up, some of the pots could have been renewed and it prbably would have been good as new

Any others out there missing old gear

Very seldom do I ever get rid of any of my gear. I've been playing for over 25 years now and I have about 90 percent of everything I've ever bought. In the very few instances where I have traded something off, it's been because I wasn't really fond of that piece of gear (which I probably got at a steal to begin with) and traded it for something that I really needed or wanted. For example I once had a Crestline acoustic which I had gotten for $50 which I traded for a beautiful Conn 12 string acoustic. I didn't really care of that old Crestline...it was a really cheap, "boxey" sounding acoustic and the Conn was/is just luscious. Most recently I traded a Behringer V-Amp for a Digitech RP-90 because the Digi really fit me much better than the Behringer and the Behringer has been purchased for cheap as an impulse buy anyways.

Very simply, in my many years of playing I've heard this -way- to often..."Yea I had a (insert guitar or amp here) that I sold years ago and I've been kicking myself in the butt ever since...". I just really never understood why anyone would get rid of something they actually liked...that just never made sense to me. I can almost see in some extreme cases...you're out of work and the tax man is coming to repossess your house or your car or something, but with most of the people I've known, that really hasn't been the case...they just up and decided one day to sell it or just trade it for something else. I actually see this from time to time on Craigslist for example "Want To Trade: Fender Standard Strat for X-Box" and you -know- that someday they're going to be one of those people kicking themselves in the butt...I just don't get it.

L8r

was my first & only, wife said it was damp smelling, i said no its the house, she said no its the amp,I said its the house, she said amp, I said hous see where I'm going here,in the end she said buy a new one, amp needed a bit of work anyway so in the end Dumped it without realizing what I was doing, got the AVT 100 ,great for a while, then you start hearing something change and why do I need all these frickin knobs anyway your saying to yourself, then the I want my baby back , went to another shop, amp story cropped up, the guy was practicaly begging me to take him to the dump said he refurbishes them , as I could tell by the amount of really old gear with really high price tags in the shop, geuss I'm just going to have to find a nicer amp, ...........just interested in others story's 8)

Yeah seeing my old Tele 72 Thinline on this last night brought a lump to my throat. Not saying its exactly the one, mine was only the RI and I'm not sure if he's playing an original or not. Traded mine in last November. Got a beautiful Gibson ES 355. The bit with the band is at 55mins, you drag the scroll thing along the bottom to get there.

Yeah nice tele , to be honest always headed straight to the strats in the guitar shops education lacking a bit, SG would be my choice of Gibson, always cast an eye over the arch tops the Joe Pass type guitars, they just look so well crafted & full of rich melody to me , need to rack up some overtime though

Obviously it's heresy to go on here about trading in a Tele for a Gibson, but one guitar I'll never be without is my 83 Strat. Btw I used to have an Epiphone Emperor, in the Joe Pass style like the ES 175: nice jazz/blues tones ... come to think of it, I quite miss that one too!

Part of me now understands that gear is simply tools and you need to keep the best and most modern tools to do the jobs right.

I do wish that I had back some of my older vinatge tools today though!

I have a friend that has one, he isn't a player. The picture above isn't it, just from the web, but it looks like that. I have been trying to convince him to sell it to me for a couple years. he doesn't even have a sentimental attachment to it, he bought it somewhere with plans to learn how to play, but never followed through.

Yeah that's the one, only mine was older, I bought it second hand in 91, and it didn't have the Joe Pass signature. Sweet guitar unless you want to rock out, then all you get is howling feedback! You should try and get your friend to see sense! I got my Strat from a guy who'd been given it as a present to learn on and never bothered! Good price, too!

Man, some of you guys make me sick. Ya know, I thought at first I was the only one who has kept guitars and amps, and then it hit me. i have gotten rid of some gear, but I never missed it. I almost forgot. Anything I loved or had sentimental value is still with me.

It all started when I was 11 yrs old. My uncle gave me an acostic guitar. Now, I wish I still had it, but it fell apart. The bridge was lifting, so I put light guage electric strings on it. i let my brother borrow it to learn on, which he did. Then he loaned it to a friend, who wanted to do something nice for letting him borrow it. He put brand new acoustic strings on it for us. Well, that did it in, and pulled the bridge right off. So, no hard feelings.

Then my mother bought my first electric, which I still have. I will keep it forever. She bought a cheap battery powered amp for it, that sounded like a fart. it got mutilated, but not before she bought me a used 1982 Peavey Backstage, which I still have. I played that guitar and amp exclusively for 13 years, when I upgraded to a 2x12 crate combo in the early 90's. Then some dude sold me a Marshall 2x12 cab and two extra celestion 80 watt speakers for $75. I used an old bass head as a slave to the Marshall and powered it by the crate for a year or two. It sounded kinda cool. I traded that crate for an ADA MP-1 and ADA microtube 200 and used that to power the marshall cab and was in tone heaven. The ADA's got ugraded too.

Of all, this I do wish I still had the MP-1, the marshall 2x12 cab and the speakers. But I have an ADA Mp-2, a marshall 4x12 1960 AV and a mesa 50/50 now, and have had since the upgrade back in the mid 90's. Since these were all better than what I had, I never looked back and have no regrets. But if I have got rid of the guitar and peavey amp my mom bought, I would regret that.

Strange thing about the Epiphone Emperor is that I'm not bothered about it but my wife still goes on about how could I have got rid of the pretty guitar! That one incidentally made way for my Taylor acoustic. Out with the old and in with the new is my rationale. I can't afford the money or the space to keep shipping in new guitars. Now I'm down to three beauts and I plan to keep it that way.

I have bought guitars and amps in the past where the soul purpose was to repair and sell them. After getting a few done I thought about just keeping them but then there goes the purpose I bought in the first place, to make a few dollars. Sometimes you just got to let it go.

Bottom line is, like MiamiMike says, they're tools, not people or pets, and you can pretty much replace anything anyway if you want to get an old guitar/amp back.

Some of this gear nostalgia is about signposting our pasts.
