save man. maby im a bit cautious, but what if you have your guitar on higher purchase then you lose your job or have huge medical bills or something like that all of a sudden. you wont be able to keep paying for your guitar and will lose it.

At least if you pay in full, its yours.

And bros and sisters, you can build up a truly righteous collection of gear if you save like that, especially for a couple decades.

In the downtown Chicago train stations, a pack costs like $8.00 !

Long time ago, 'gave up stashing for the six and now just do the pack of smokes cash. And saving thusly, one can have gear and in this instance, books and scale modeling stuff...and clean lungs.

Best of fortune!

I'd almost start smoking, so I can quit and save money!

Anyway... I've been told to never buy on credit, unless it's a mortgage, or something like that. And I'm still not old enough to lend money.
Maybe that's why I only have one guitar... Money is easily spent on other things. Food, clothes, music, beer, concert tickets... It surely isn't cheap.

Never, ever spend money that you don't have......unless of course, you are buying a Fender.

Hello Yodacaster,

I have an acount that I pay for my musical
instruments and related stuff out of. After
20 years of contributions it's a pretty good
warchest.

Now last year, Guitar Centers offer of a year
with no interest and no payments grabbed me
and I went for a new axe I'll soon have it paid
off and was a painless exercise. Bear in mind
if you do not pay off in your prescribed time
period your gonna have to pay all the back
interest as a penalty. So If you take a deal like
this, best to set a monthly budget that'll pay things
off a bit early.

Best bit of advice "Don't get what you can't afford"

Cheers

I usually pay cash but I have bought two guitars on a layaway plan. I like the idea that if I've found a particulary nice example of a guitar I'm looking for, I can have it put away while I'm saving up for it. When I say I pay "cash", I don't mean that literally. I'll use a credit card but I'll pay the bill the minute it comes in. I have not and will not pay a dime of credit card interest.

I really don't buy that much gear. I've got a bunch of guitars and amps, but they've accumulated over 40 years time. Some guys that have been playing 2 years have more stuff than I do.

I'd have to agree with Mr. Bill! If you have the means to save the scratch, then that is the best way to get your buying done. After all who wants to pay ithe interest rates?

I've only purchased new gear if I've had the money for it.

+1 for this and all similar posts.

I very, very rarely spend money that I don't have. For gear -- something I don't need to ensure my continued survival (arguable, maybe -- I refuse to use a credit card. I just put away a certain percentage of my pay every month and use some of that if I feel the need to have a new guitar, pedal etc.

Credit and payment plans are very, very tempting, but unless your job is assured, they can be dangerous.

Layaway is different than buying on credit. If oyu can find a place that will still do it, it's a viable option.

I do the same......I call it "Mad Money". I stash away money every month, just for guitar equipment. At the moment.......I have about $1,000 stashed away. I have nothing at the moment that I want......but I'll keep stashing away.....so when I do want something.......it'll be there to get what I want. I probably did the current "stash" over the last six months.

Well I have my own GM saving plan (guitar money). If I can't afford it I'll pass, save for a few months,do some overtime or steal from my grandmother.
Seriously, I'm planning a 3000k budget for my dream guitar. Someday we'll meet and I'll be ready for her.
I pushed the idea of saving from quitting smoking/drinking/eating/clothing/whatever, and everytime I make a post to this forum, I put a buck in a jar for my guitar project. At that rate I'll be ready to buy in ten years but at that time, guitar prices will have skyrocket to new levels. :?
Kidding again, I already have started this plan sometimes ago and I am ready now to meet my dream guitar. Until then I visit the local guitar centers a lot and try as much guitars as I can. And continue my GM saving plan.

I had elective plastic surgery performed on my wallet and got rid of all my credit cards 10 years ago so it's cash and carry for me. Okay, I do use a debit card for convenience but I can't buy unless the money is there. That's a good thing when a G.A.S. attack hits.

John

Was it a Visaectomy?
