2006, readers of Total Guitar magazine voted the guitar solo by Jimmy Page in Led Zeppelin’s 'Stairway To Heaven' as the greatest guitar solo of all time. The 1971 track was voted ahead of tracks by Van Halen, Queen, Guns N' Roses, Jimi Hendrix, Metallica and The Eagles by its UK readers.

I can probably think of 100 solos right off the top of my head that are most musical, more interesting and more important than the one from Stairway. About 20 occured to me while I was typing that sentence.

Just because it knocked you out when you were 12 doesn't make it meaningful... in fact, quite the opposite. :D

It is a perfectly orchestrated solo in a perfectly orchestrated song. Page also had the tone just right. That song and guitar solo were the center-pieces for young '70 guitar players (right along with Freebird that hopefully got #2).

i can agree with that if only speaking of the studio version. Page did himself total injustice playing live, always drunk as a skunk

however though, the whole guitar magazine "scene" is full of bandwagoneers and biased opinion. i would not have voted Stairway as no. 1. im glad to see the skynyrd photo, those guys could rip! in fact, i'm convinced that all southern rock guitarists in that time were in the top bracket of awesomeness. like every southern rock solo ive heard is just mind-blowing, AND they still retain the heart and soul at the same time, regardless how fast they move, which separates them from the cheesy crap bulls**t (aka anything containing the word 'metal')

let's see, without thinking too far about it, i want to nominate for No. 1 solo ever The Outlaws - "Green Grass and High Tides". in fact that whole song puts me into extreme chill-ness. yea might be jumping on the southern bandwagon now, but this is definitely a worthy nominee.
i believe i found a totally killer 2-part series on youtube for this song live

Page played a lot of great solo's in Zep's live gig's and when I hear ' Stairway to Heaven ' it's just 'another one' in an amazing set.

Great solo, no doubt. One of my favorites. There are a number of solos I like better, but that's personal preference.

I thought Page was amazing. Stairway, The Rain Song, No Quarter, Rock and Roll, Over the Hills and Far Away, Dancing Days, and various others. Great writer. But that comment was right about playing live. I considered him a much better studio player. Some guys are usually one or the other, and some play far better live than in the studio. The ones that impress me the most are the ones that can do both, and do them well. That's rare.

oh well please do not get me wrong everyone, i love Jimmy Page for what he can be. yes yes, EXCELLENT writer and composer. he left a mark on my heart when i began uncovering their hidden gems. they made some truly awesome songs that most people dont even know exist.

also however, it's safe to say that Page's strengths were actually in Folk, rather than blues. i mean, he's a killer guitarist in the straight-ahead blues/rock/etc. genre, but think about his folky stuff, and you'll begin to see where he really shines. that material was a lot cleaner, more complex, and elaborate...or simply put, beautiful.

but i still stand by my comment about his live playing. i've watched many a Zep video and cried out of agony and disappointent when he totally louses up a big moment in a song or solo.

and this picture could explain why...

Totally agree. I mean, come on - "You Shook Me". Could ANYBODY make a WORSE blues song if they tried? The singing - horrible. The guitar - I guess this is what a happens when a white brittish guy plays american blues maybe. In any case, they should have all been beaten for farting this abomination out to the public and trying to make it sound bluesy.
