How many of you come from parents that played a musical instrument?

My parents did not, but I have 3 brothers that all play guitar/bass.

Neither of them did or do - so I have no idea why they got me into music at such a young age.

Maybe they were just living out their dreams through me?

My mum is really musical, she played flute, piano, violin, classical guitar and a few others I think.

My mother played the piano in some far off time, but does not anymore. My father bought a guitar from a pawn shop once, and then sold the same guitar to the same shop a week later. I've finally persuaded one of my brothers to learn to play the bass, and I'm still working on the other one to get him to play drums.

none of my parents played anything, me and one of my brothers both play guitar/bass, and tons of other instruments... maybe it has something to do with never being exposed to music very much, so it was something new for us once we got into it because our parents never helped us out with anything

My old man played a Stella tenor guitar with his cousin, who played a 12-string acoustic, in the early 60s. He tells me they used to busk around some of the bigger East Coast folk festivals. I recently found that old Stella in the rafters of their garage, where it has sat for something like 30 years. Aside from a small soundboard crack, it's still intact but not what you'd call playable. (I'm thinking about getting a new nut and saddle installed, and working it into the acoustic act.)

But it was my mom who insisted I take piano lessons as a wee lad. I also found several Beatles and Zeppelin albums (including original Rubber Soul and Sgt. Pepper's pressings) in her collection.

I didn't much care for the lessons at the time, but I'm sure glad I took them nowadays.

My Pops was a bass player in a bluesgrass band. I really miss those days... going to festivals, riding around on their tour bus and playing fiddle on stage with them (well, I was only three so I danced around more than anything). I've been playing music pretty much since I learned to walk.

In our family, interest in music seems to be a genetic trait which skips a generation. My parents didn't play and my children don't seem interested. But My brother and sister are both good musicians. All three of us had to take 2 years of piano lessons before we could start playing guitar. Hated the idea at the time, but it helped me later on.
