That's what the "lawsuit" guitars were about. It is illegal, but there's only so much you can do to stop it. Fernandes got in trouble for that years ago for their strat copy. Most companies today that make strat and tele style guitars differ in dimensions, woods, and electronics so that they're similar but quite different. Even Gibson/Epiphone have a strat-style guitar.

The knock-offs were also a reason Fender Japan was set up.

Unless you've been misinformed enough to buy one, does it really effect you?

What's with the attitude? There is no need for snide remarks. If you want to ask questions you should give details or be prepared to be asked for them. That being said, I saw you're other thread on amps and where they are made and would just like to know if you were referring to Fender products made by Fender in other countries, which you seem to have a problem with, or pirate copies that we all have a problem with.

Its called a 'free market'. Aslong as exact replica's arent being produced its quite legal and lets face it competition is always a good thing. It can only lead to better product. Personaly fender should be more worried about the likes of anderson, pensa and suhr to name a few.

The lawsuit never happened it was a threat made by CBS to the japanese fujigen factory that i strongly suspect was a persuader to ease the startup of fender japan. Ever wondered why 70's/80's tokais are so good?
Heres the answer
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FujiGen

In part those fakes of the 70's/80's put Cbs guitars in a less desirable state. Theres the well told story of fullerton workers not being able to match standards and dan smith retraining them after returning with a japanese instrument.

All told anyone who enjoys a modern fender owes a fair bit to those far eastern fella's.

Why spend money and resources pursuing copyright infringement when copyright laws dont cross borders well anyway. All this to sue a company working out of a warehouse with no real assets, there's no money in it. China, biggest manufacturer of fake everything as we all know. All of the more reasons to educate yourself to recognize counterfeits from genuines.
