Now, now, be nice.

The 'collegiates' (ancestral lineage of 'preps') were kids in the 'college prep' curriculum rather than (back then) 'general' or 'vocational.'

Thats what I mean bout the terms bein mostly Americanisms, we have different systems over here, even in the UK Scotland has different systems to Wales, N. Ireland or England.

The only time we here things like Prep, Jock, Nerd, Softmore, Prom or anything is in re-runs of 90210, The Wonder Years or Saved By The Bell..............god almighty that was a bad show!!!

lol

I am labeled as, basically, the (pretty much only) punk/alternative/"classic"/90's rock and roller weird-ass stoner/hippie, long-haired, skinny flannel-toting guitar player who hates almost everything that is ridiculously popular with no good reason and also happened to get good grades..

I am very much in the weird crowd, mostly by choice. I'm (usually) friendly with 95% of everyone at school, not buddy-buddy, but friendly, but I prefer the guys/gals who just mess around and have fun as themselves.

Celtic I dont think anyone who's posted here will have much of a clue about belfast from 63-99. Lets face it hardly any english people know the full score the fact that nothern ireland was very much a warzone throughout those years but was dumbed down by the media. How the whole prodestant/catholic thing got turned into 'which side of the street you could buy drugs on' in the late 90's.

The fact seems to me from my irish family members that irish schools are a 8hour punishment and have little to do with nurturing adolescents.

I have relatives on Moms side of the Family that where jailed there and then later deported back to the U.S. a long time ago. For one he was locked away for several years. My one Great Grand Dad was from Ireland and a strict Catholic who said it was a War that would never end until Ireland was whole. The walls and the hate are still there. I have Famliy that live in Ireland and a few in the north. Last time I was over on a trip I got a hard look by a group because of all my tattoos and one of them is a tribute tat to 1916 up my left arm and I have several catholic tats on arms so I am guessing these dudes were prodestant's.

My school was just a normal school............we just had other things on our minds than calling each other Jocks etc.

Plus don't know where the 8 hour things come from. I went to a very good grammar school in Belfast which was 9:30 to 3:30.....6 hours.

Of course most people know what happened, there are very smart and educated people on this forum. And definitely many who would know the true meaning behind many Gary Moore and Rory Gallagher songs, U2 and Therapy? also. Many Americans know whats been happening here.... Bill Clinton had a lot to do with the peace process plus the East coast of the States is full of Irish...ever been to NYC or Boston (home of the Celtics)?

I think English people do know about it seein as thats who the war was with!!! Just seems like you don't know much. And it was never 'street segregation either...it was just areas of town, like say Harlem is to the Upper West Side or Spanish Harlem. It was a war to free Ireland from the British (Catholic perspective) and to keep N. Ireland British (Protestant/English perspective).

My father and two friends were killed in this mess...................

And as for 'little to do with nurturing....' Northern Ireland has the best grades in all 4 UK countries. Plus labeling an entire countries education system because of what you were told is just a tad wrong. Thats like me saying I had a cousin who went to a $@!& school in Hackney so it must be the same as yours.

Entered as a greaser, morphed into a hippie flower child.
I remember a lot of really good music happened, don't remember ever attending any classes, then all of a sudden it was the 70's and I was married.

Just relating what my mother her sisters and parents told me. I dont understand the situation one bit and dont have a side. To say street segregation never occured then why the peace lines though? Also as a catholic why did you attend a grammar school that would of been filled with prodestants? That must of been a firewalk, also where did you take your 11+ catholic schools dont support that education system.

I graduated HS in 1962. I went to a college prep, all boys catholic high school.

I was a 4-eyes, a brain, a sci-fi reader, a train nut/model railroader and middle distance runner. There were maybe 5 of us matching that list, except for the runner part - that was a trait only I had. This was in a class size of 320 or so. We were all friends. There was no name for our group.

We didn't get picked on, and we all got along with everyone else.

Gil, who still is a 4-eyes, still a sci-fi reader, still a train nut/model railroader, but I don't go and do any more running  8)

Hey Gil, that's hip.

Check out James Hood's Adventure--Into the Neverland for lite sci-fi.

And good to see a fellow scale modeler here in Guitariana, tho for this picker, it's all static.

I was more of the class clown type, which is why I voted "other." Before high school, I was one that everybody laughed at and made fun of, but it was only because I hadn't realized that things I said and did were funny. Once I started laughing with them, and at myself, there wasn't too many peer groups (cliques) that I was excluded from...even if it was for the "comedy relief" factor. One thing I didn't do, and still don't over 20 years past high school, is joke about/laugh at somebody in a malicious manner. From my experience in elementary and junior high school, I know all too well what it's like to be hurt in the name of humor. I do have to say that it's sometimes tough being the funny guy, but somebody's gotta do it. After all, laughter is the best medicine. :D

The peace lines were to separate parts of town e.g. splitting the West in two.

Why would my school be filled with protestants? It was a Catholic grammer school bro??!?! Its the same system.

I did my 11 plus in Belfast, so did the 3000 Catholics who went to my school.

What do you mean Catholic schools don't support the education system? Of course they do man?!?!?! I think you need to research a bit more bro.

Martin McGuinness from Sinn Fein was the N. Ireland Minister for education for Christ sake. You couldn't get much more Catholic support than that i.e. running it!

I think all the tales you were told are utter bull**** to be honest (and slightly offended). Was there Leperachauns in these stories?!?
