A Strat is perfect as it is comfortable, versatile, and about as easy to play as you can get.

If you are on a budget (or not sure how long the guitar buzz might last) a good Squier Standard Strat would be quite adeqate. Many accomplished players find the Squiers more than satisfying to play.

If your budget allows then maybe strecth to a Fender Standard Strat (Mexican made) or maybe a good second hand American standard.

Either way you'll have a guitar that'll last a long time and give you many years of playing enjoyment. Just make sure you get yourself down to a good music store and try out as many as you can. If you don't feel confident enough yourself, take along a friend who can try them out with you.

Just one final tip: While a black guitar might look really cool, you'll go insane trying to keep it looking shiny. Every little mark and fingerprint shows up on a black finish!

Cheers.

I'll have to recommend the MIM strat. I have one myself and it is a good sounding sturdy guitar. I also recommend going to a local guitar shop and trying out different guitars to see which you like best.

An MIM Strat will be good enough to play and great-sounding and not "the cheap way out," LONG after you forget what it cost and if it hurt at the time.

Welcome and have fun. Make sure you get a good setup and a flexible amp which is similar in quality to the guitar.

Personal advice on gear acquisition: Decide you will take up smoking cigarettes, now, today, A pack per day. For the rest of your life.

Now, ten seconds later, give up the ciggie butts habit. But put away the $ for that pack EVERY DAY in a music fund.

Buy the best guitar you can afford. If that is a MIM Strat or a MIA standard or deluxe so be it. If you learn to play and stick with it you're inevitably going to upgrade so you might as well get the best you can afford now.

+1

That would be my advise as well.

Go with a MIM Fender Standard Strat ...

+1 -- Yes, it has already been said in droves ... a MIM Std Strat is ideal. The beauty of it is that it is a real guitar that you will likely never grow out of, no matter how good you get. If the price point is a little too high, you can get a lightly used one of Craigslist. Or, if going Squier, try to get a Classic Vibe '60s model ... it is the best Strat that Squier makes, a very nice guitar in its own right needing no mods.

To fender_newbie...welcome to the site and to the guitar journey (a journey that I'm on the road to starting myself).

To JSJH-I love the idea of the music fund!

MIM if you can afford it. If not Standard Squier or better would be my suggestion.

When I started I went down the local music store to see if they rented out guitars. They did and I tried a couple first before I bought.
This allowed me the opportunity to find one I really liked plus it gave me several weeks to find out whether fully decide whether playing the guitar was something I truly wanted to do long term
What's the point in spending a lot of money on a nice guitar only to discover a few weeks down the line that it's really not for you after all?!
Just a thought.
Good luck and stick with it!

I'd suggest getting the best that you can comfortably afford.

That being said, if by chance, you lose interest, or even if you don't, you'll have a higher trade in or resale value. I'm a firm believer in the old adage that goes "you get what you pay for."
