Larry was my dad's half-brother (same mother) and about 3 years older.
Born Lawrence Goldberg, I can only assume that he was adopted by my grandfather. My dad was the eldest of his three half-brothers. As time went by, they did not grow into adulthood in a close relationship. Of my father's two younger brothers he was only close with one and they both became estranged from the other two. My father passed away when I was 13 and beyond the age of 15, I no longer had any contact with Larry.

Not from Larry's dad, but suspect from my paternal grandmother and both my maternal grandparents. Both my mom and one of her sisters pllayed piano, the latter, quite well. Three of them were opera fanatics and I saw Madame Butterfly at the age of six.

"The Force" was strong in this one

Larry had a stepdaughter whose wedding i remember attending when I was quite young. He became lost to followup until I came upon his obituary in a New Jersey newspaper when I was a resident of that state back in the late seventies. Apparently he had been living not more than an hours drive from me, and remarried. There was little mention of the details of his family. I certainly would not have been first on line for his estate.

A little anecdote. Larry wrote that little ditty "The Umbrella Man". It's known well as acccompanying music to Popeye's hamburger addicted friend. It also gained some notoriety in the time of Neville Chamberlain. In the late seventies, the TV quiz show "The $100,000 Tune" chose it as the jackpot winning melody. It was not guessed. It bothered me to no end, as the clock ticked away, that I knew that song but couldn't remember why.
I was floored when the title and composer were revealed. Why?? As kids, my sister and I would watch TV cartoons at dinner. On one occasion, there came Wimpy, waddling along, twirling his umbrella to that music. My mother said, "Hear that music?" "Your Uncle Larry wrote that song".

In the small world department, I came to treat a gentleman who was a pianist, did demo work, knew my uncle well, and played golf with him on occasions. In addition, a former colleague of mine is married to a vocalist whose manager was one of my uncles song collaborators. She knew him well.

tune that sticks out for me was 2 songs in one, think they rolled both together in some shows Hocus Pocus & Sylvia by Focus , Ackermans guitar playing, awsome! van Leers yoddling & organ playing, unusual to say the least, brilliant drummer also , just an outstanding band , think their style was influenced by classical training, has that feel to it at times , lots of build up to huge cressendo , but all in their stride when you watch them Brilliant , one of them songs the volume has to be cranked up

A good command of theory and harmony will give you the insight into doing that. Your experience is not a first. I've heard it done elsewhere and well. It's a fascinating exercise.

It would have been wonderful if my dad's relationships with his family had been fulfilling and his parents had lived long enough, and had he, for me to have really had a handle on all of this before, during, and after. But life pendulum swings to both sides and 'what if' have pluses and minuses. Be that as it may, my grandmother's offspring has touched the lives of many who never knew him.

By the way....if you look closely...."Your Nobody 'Til Somebody Love's You" is in there too.  Put a chair under your spouse when you break that one to her.
