my old-time zappa buddy came by with the zpz dvd set this weekend. what's up with dweezil's white strat with the "left hand" style headstock? i've seen photos of his f-hole sparkle strat with the same style headstock. just thought it was an interesting design.
absolutely insane solo by steve vai on zombie woof!
anybody else have the pleasure of watching the dvds... or maybe lucky enough to see the show live?

good stuff!!! highly recommend it.

i've had the pleasure of seeing frank a number of times, and saw dweez a couple of summers ago. i'll have to say, i was impressed with the detail dweezil puts into getting all the sounds just right... like you're listening to the songs as they sounded on the vinyl.
vai blew me away!

Yeah, it's just ending now, wow!! what a show I loved it, stunning musicians in that line-up. To be honest, I don't think they needed Vai but I guess he had to make an appearance for nostalgia reasons.
See what you mean about the strat, I think I could make out Zappa on the headstock but not sure, yeah I don't know why he has it like that, probably just cosmetic.
Anyway great stuff, I might get the dvd.
Cheers :D

the ZPZ show is coming to town here in around three weeks time... snaffled up tickets as soon as I heard about it. Not sure what Mrs mondo will make of it... heh. Ah, well, we don't get to go out that often, so she'll enjoy it on some level...

Yeah, right Snowy, I hadn't noticed Dweez much in the past. I don't know why but I'm noticing now, what a knock-out band, great musicians.
Very impressed.
Cheers :D
BTW if you can get sky arts on tv they do some great shows and are currently doing a series on the history of American music. Must see. :D

It sounded good on tv so live it will be somethin' else.
Cheers :D

I do receive sky arts Rhumba, it's been pretty cool lately. I've watched Clapton, Neil Young, Robert Cray and many others. I missed this show tonight though unfortunately, I was out for a very cool jam session with a few friends :D

I made the mistake of lending the ZPZ DVDs to my guitar teacher THREE WEEKS AGO and I haven't received them back. I knew I shouldn't have lent them out!

There's a GP article posted on the ZPZ website that has a pretty good rundown of the equipment Dweezil uses with ZPZ. I'm pretty sure he talks about the Strat and the SG he uses. They even got down to the picks he prefers.

There is some truly great musicianship in that band. I've been keeping an eye on the ZPZ web site to see if they'll be coming to the mid-atlantic states this year. If so I'll be there.

I also picked up all three "Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar" CDs the other day... there is some great guitar work on those CDs.

uhhh. the set is 5 discs, 2dvd's, 3 cd's.
i don't know if dweezil is still doing it, but on the last tour, you could go to the zpz website with the number on your ticket and download the show you saw on mp3... pretty cool, might wanna check that out.

if you ever have the opportunity to listen through the whole set in one sitting, you'll be a changed person :)
i've always been a "whole album" guy. i think the way tracks are put together makes them build on one another... tommy and quadrophoenia are great examples... hot rats and sheik yerbouti also.... just to name a very few.

Heh... yes, I was looking at that article with all DZ's gear and I've been coveting a Red Bear pick since then. Even he admits that they're too expensive to throw out into the audience, though, so I think I'll be passing on that one. Mind you, I have been using the same Jazz III pick for more than 15 years... it's about time I got around to buying a new one, it seems I don't lose them easily...

It's been a good few months for guitarists down under... since October last year I've seen John Scofield, Adrian Belew, Clapton and now DZ. The Belew performance really put me in the mood for some Zappa, as well as generally reinvigorating me musically. I was a bit shy about going up to him after the show, but I was with a more outgoing friend who shoved me forward and said "This guy's a good guitarist..." (at this point I hadn't played much electric guitar over the preceding decade, being more of a flamenco guy), and AB was kind enough to chat for a bit and put up with my profuse thanks for his continued musical output. As I was leaving he called out "Keep playing, man!" -- and shortly afterwards I bought a Custom Shop strat second hand and did just that.

Anybody who lives in the path of the Adrian Belew Power Trio's tour for this year should do anything they can to catch him and the Slick brother/sister rhythm section. Best show I've ever seen, hands down.
