I would like to learn slide guitar. I don't have a slide yet and was looking around to find one. I never realized there were so many different kinds of slides out there. Does anyone have any tips on buying a slide? What kind of slide do you guys use? I'm looking for a kind of warm, mellow kind of sound. Thanks.

I use glass slides for the warmer sound they make, I'm changing back and forth between a dunlop pyrex glass slide and a medicine bottle I got from a friend, not a Coricidin bottle though:(

check this site and navigate through the menus to get some tips about slide shapes and materials http://www.bigheartslide.com/glasspage.html
The best result should however be a 'true' bottleneck, etc a slide made of a beer bottle or the likes of it, cut by yourself to obtain just the right length for you

I'd say your are better off getting a couple of different slides to begin with, then when your style settles you'll probably already have a favorite slide

Just my 2 cents, I'm a beginner on the slide

*edit* Sometime during the summer I'll hopefully start playing acoustic slide and here i think the brutal rattle sound of brass sliding (thinking 'bout Robert Johnson) is better suited for that mean and dirty delta sound

I use both glass and metal, for different sounds. My glass slides are lighter than the metal ones and also slides easier (faster) across the fretboard. I use them for the electric. On the Dobro I prefer a really heavy brass one I bought recently.

This site helped me out when I started playing slide:

As Time-Machine suggested, you should try several to see what you prefer. Good luck!

A pawn shop in Oslo has a lady making some cool slides out of wine bottles, I'm checking them out next time I break my glass slide

The first slide I got was a Joe Perry endorsed one, it's pretty cool. I think it's made from some kind of ceramic stuff. A few months ago I got a V Pick slide, the difference is night and day. I use this one a lot, it feels good, and sounds great.

if you are looking for a mellow kind of tone, i would suggest trying a ceramic/clay slide. i bought a clay dunlop keb' mo' slide a few years ago and have loved its sound.

One more thing!
For a mellow sound finger picking is far better than using a pick, if you're used to only play with a pick it'll get a little to get used to, but it's pretty easy when you get the basics down

I have used Zippo Lighters, Beer bottles, Mic stands, and just about anything else made of metal or glass that had a flat surface on one side.
Coricidin bottles used to be quite the thing and everyone was looking for them years after the company quit making them. You can find some aftermarket made ones these days.

I have several Coricidin bottle slides, a couple of metal slides, and somewhere I even have a ceramic slide.

Nowadays I use a V-Pick slide http://66.84.20.112/accessories/44
There are a couple of different sizes and you can even get one personalized.

I've been doing some slide work lately. I have a v-pick slide but I would like to get hold of a heavier one as well. Some kind of metal one perhaps and yes, I find finger pickin' the best way to go, I find I can damp the strings easier. :D
Cheers

I play acoustic slide and have found that for acoustic work I prefer a very heavy metal slide. The mass helps it stay stable on a vibrating acoustic string, where a light weight slide tends to bounce a little. I can't use it effectively on an electric, though. It's a really personal preference thing, I expect.

Agreed--and it's helpful for muting the strings you're not playing.

Glass or ceramic will sound warmer.

I use a brass slide that I love the sound of--more older bluesy style sound. I have a chrome one as well that I like--but the brass one fits better, and sounds better. If I used a glass or ceramic slide--I'd break it too often. Of course that may not be an issues for you.

I use a heavy walled galss slide. I like the warm tone it produces even if it is a little bulky.

Try as many materials as you can. Oh, and look in your tool box, you might have a spark plug socket that fits your finger.
