Within this wonderful economy, it looks like I will soon be blessed with a killer job offer including a full relocation package. The position is just north of Pittsburgh (like 15 miles or so). I have never even been to Pennsylvania...

What is the weather like? Humidity? Brutal winters? Brutal summers?
Is it a nice place to raise kids? (I have three)
Real estate prices?
Any good real-estate web sites for the area?
General thoughts or random opinions???

C'mom, Fender Forum, help me out... :D

Pittsburgh? Never heard of it. Just kidding. Never been there but I'm in lower New York. I don't think the weather is that different than here. It gets cold in the winter and they might get a little more snow. I've never been there though so I can't tell you about the city itself. I don't think they have as many bats as Austin. They do have one heck of a football team though. I would do a google search for the real estate and local newspapers and news channels, schools etc. Should provide a good picture of the city.

I live right where you are being relocated to. The suburbs to the north are the best...you don't have the traffic nightmares. The weather is fine, most people complain about the lack of sunny days, but other than that it's pretty typical. Great city for kids. PNC Park is the most spectacular ball park in the country and football season brings an amazing frenzy to the city. Real estate is average...there are lots of new developments to the North so that's good for you. The city itself is relatively small and pretty easy to navigate. The best thing about Pittsburgh is Pittsburgh Guitars on the south side! Good luck and welcome to the 'Burgh

My brother had lived for a few years, in Northern Pittsburg and he loved it. Ironically, it was his job which relocated him there and in turn, relocated him out of there. Of course, while he was there, I went to visit him a few times I loved it. It is a fantastic area with fantastic people which is what makes all the difference. I doubt very strongly you'll be disappointed. Best of luck!

I would think living anywhere in the rust belt depends on what type of work you do. Though I do like PA. and have many relatives across the state.

What exactly is the rust belt, just for us non-americans?:)

I've lived in PA all my life but still haven't made it to Pittsburgh. I'm going there this weekend though, so that should be fun. I know people who live or have lived there and it seems like a pretty good place. Can't say for sure what it's like in the different places though. My problem with it is the Steelers thing! haha jk ;) :P

Hello Time Machine,

Rust belt is an area in the Northeastern United States
between Boston and Washington DC. At one time these
states had a lot of heavy industry and many facilities
that produced steel and iron products. Many of the
factorys shut down & jobs lost, new industries are now
gaining a foothold in these areas.

Cheers.

It was shown that between 1990 and 2000 that Pittsburgh Metro population decreased of close to 10% due to Manufactuing and job loss. It is believed the next census will show a larger decrease in population.

Tell me about it. I am a Raiders fan. It frosts me everytime I see that "immaculate reception" video. Reception - my eye!!! Franco Harris actually catches the ball a nanosecond after it hit the ground. What a farce ... the Raiders get robbed yet again. And don't get me started on that Patriots "tuck rule" thing.

I live just south of Pittsburgh in West Virginia, but have spent quite a bit of time in Pittsburgh recently. I do a bit of buying and selling guitars in the area. It seems to have a pretty decent music scene. A few good guitar shops, a bunch of pawn shops to find those used treasures.
It is a little hard to get around in downtown due to the rivers restricting traffic to a few bridges and tunnels. Not too bad, just don't travel at rush hour.
