I am a future guitar purchaser and I've been wondering what song I'll be able to play first after getting the basics down. This led me to my first topic post question:

What was the first song you all played once you learned some stuff?

The first song I ever learned how to play was yet another cliche: Knockin' on Heaven's Door. I was (and, for that matter, still am) nuts about Dylan and I asked my dad to show me the easiest song of his to play! I still occasionally do it with my band!

"Walk Don't Run," The Ventures.

Learn the lead, then the barre chord progression and strum, then the walking bass line.

"It's 3 songs for the price of 1!"

Then fool around with it in all sorts of ways. There are a gob of examples on recordings.

Thank you for these ideas. I will write these down so the minute I learn enough I can start playing some tunes. Keep the ideas coming!

First songs I learned on electric bass guitar:

Go to the Mirror - The Who - Tommy
Hello Goodbye - Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour

I played standup bass in orchestra in grade school, so was able to learn semi-complex stuff on bass guitar pretty quick in junior high.

My first was either Sunshine of Your Love by Cream or Freefallin by Tom Petty, I can't remember.

Free Fallin is a great song. It would be cool to be able to play that myself :)
