I have been playing for 1 month now after a 31 year hiatus and spend on average 1-2 hrs a day practicing. I don't have much of a life as I work 50 hrs a week. I am convinced I never played this good when I was younger. I think it's the quality of the guitars I have now compared to when I was younger. I also feel the internet has a lot to do with it. I have been doing some of the lessons on you tube. Didn't have personal computers let alone the internet 31 years ago (the dark ages). Sharing information now is light years ahead of back then. I try to break it down 50/50 to practicing scales and learning some songs. Don't laugh but the latest effort is Bachs Cantata. I like pretty much ALL music especially blues. Anyone have any input? I heard someone say play with a metronome on another thread. I don't own one but I was a drummer first so rhythm has never been an issue for me.
Are there any hand exercises you do to strengthen your hand and fingers? I have been trying to do warm up exercises with just my pinky to try and strengthen that as well.

PF , bro , +1 on the not playing for awhile helps appreciate playing when you play again , sounds like you are having fun and 'like pretty much ALL music' don't forget to boogie , good practice technique , enjoy bro enjoy .

I cant remember the last time i sat down and made a conscious decision to work on technique. I have a guitar thats usually next to me that i pick up at will and strum or pick for a bit every now and again.

I practice for 30-60 minutes a day on average, but practicing just don't seem right for me.
What I'm benefiting from is just having a guitar with EVERYWHERE i go, playing whenever i get the chance to, basically I just bring an electric, a mini marshall battery amp, headphones and a mini-jack to jack adapter
Sometimes I play, sometimes I play along by ear to records and other times I'm jammin' along to records
My friends seem to really enjoy it, at least they're grooving along:)
Another plus it that I basically always have a guitar near me when meeting fellow musiscians

Not enough...It varies anywhere from 0 minutes to a couple hours depending on what else is going on, or how motivated I feel. As much as I like playing, sometimes I don't feel like playing, and I won't force myself to play,or practice, because its not as fun...

I try for 1 to 2 hours per day. Somedays it's less, my 64-year old hands sometimes have some issues.

I play for about an hour a day usually, I don't see it so much as practice anymore because I don't do any serious work anymore, it's more just for the enjoyment now.
However, I have been working on slide technique lately, I haven't bothered to much with that in the past but I find I love it now. Great stuff. :D

Can't tell you how many times I've been asked that well worn question:

"Hey Doc, isn't it time you stopped practicing and began doing this for real?"

before college it was at least 2 hours a night. college killed that off with study, and then work was just as bad. im only really getting back into it now after playing very little for 4 years.

nowdays, if im really feeling it after work i can play anything from 30 mins - 3 hours.

often im just too tired after work so im lucky if i get 30 mins. I will never force myself to play, as if i start doing that, it becomes a chore and not something i enjoy.

that said though, i really need to crank it up a notch. my guitar teacher showed me some fingerstyle today and afterwards, when i got home, i sat in front of th etv for about 4 hours and just twidled away with an attempt at some fingerstyle. man, you think lecky guitar gives you caluses, going back to acoustic, and not using a pick wrecks both hands. I cant even strum at the minute! hoping it will be better tomorrow.

I have a guitar in my hand 1/2 hour to 2 hours almost everyday - usually playing with different music on the stereo. IT seems to work as I continually pick up on riffs and structures from the like to Jonny Lang, Eric Clapton, and many others.

A couple of hours every morning - hardly at all any more.
I'm kinda old now and not in any projects or writing much, so motivation is waning.
