The same reason girls don't play sports as often: they aren't encouraged enough when they are younger. In this country, men get the feeling they can do whatever they want from an early age, and women do not. Simple, and sad, as that.

BTW, Wata from the band Boris is a killer guitar player and a total ear-melter.

Sports is a poor analogy.

Playing music is artistic and inner-directed, and something that women excel at (just scan any symphony orchestra). It's also something you're not likely to get maimed doing.

Sports are testosterone-fueled outer-directed physical contests. Injuries that last a lifetime are common.

The problem is that men have turned rock guitar into something that resembles sports more than it does making music. (How many jazz players do you know with tinnitus?)

This, BTW, is why so many rock guitar players are such horribly, laughably bad musicians. But man, are they tough. And LOUD!!! :D

Maybe a little too acoustic for this crowd, but Carrie Underwood is competent and she sings great.

I believe the topic is "rock stars." Cordell Jackson doesn't qualify, beer commercials not withstanding.
