I worked with a folk artist a number of years ago -- backing him on electric guitar. He used the capo (as has already been mentioned) to shift an open chord pattern to match his voice. On some songs, I'd use barre chords but if he was looking for an open chord sound for the song itself, I'd use a capo.

Open chords (even capoed) tend to ring out more than barre chords and espeically at low volume levels, that's sometimes the effect the songwriter wants. I've heard the "it's cheating" debate -- as opposed to learning barre chords and how to transpose on the fly. Maybe so, but so what. And when that's the desired sound, not cheating at all.

Thanks for all the advice. I went out and bought a KYSER capo, they are very well made.
I wanted to learn SHERYL CROW's new song LOVE IS FREE. I did learn it and it is a fun son to play, it has an interesting strum pattern.
The only problem that I had with the capo was; the song called for a fiifth fret capo position and then to play a A-E-B and so I thought that I had to play those notes below the capo, however I didn't know that it meant to use those finger patterns, but the notes would be 5 steps different.
It is a live and learn thing.
I did end up learning the song and it sounds great.
