The thing I hate most about the guys at GC is that they assume you know nothing about the products. I had a guy go into a whole speech about the difference in two pedals I was looking at. I let him finish and asked him if he preferred germanium or silicone diodes in the clipping section. That shut him up pretty quick.

I'll bet the poor kid went home and cried all night.

What I hate most about Guitar Center is that seemingly everybody who walks in the door thinks they should be treated like a rock star while having their mind read and their butt massaged, and that everyone who works on the floor should have the complete knowledge of every product manager at every manufacturer.

I've received just as much misinformation, hustling and blatant lying from the owners of local stores as from Guitar Center employees. Actually, more.

I get treated very well at GC, have always had a good experience and have never bought anything that wasn't a huge bargain. Here's why:

1. I'm an actual professional and the staff at my store knows it. When they see me in the store, they know I'm here to buy.

2. I don't expect to "hang out" at the store. This is a a retail store, not Starbuck's. I come in when I want to buy something, I ask some questions, I try things out, I buy what I want and I leave.

3. I don't expect the staff to throw rose petals at my feet, know what I want before I ask, or tell at a glance how much I know about clipping diodes.

As a result, it's always pleasant for me at GC. I got a PRS Soapy II for $289 with the gig bag, got my blowout priced copy of NI Komplete 3 for a pittance, and always with a smile.

Cripes, guys, the people who work there are just humans! You don't expect this kind of perfection from the doofus who runs your local mom 'n' pop, so what's the REAL deal with all this GC hatin'?

Which, as I will point out again, is clearly bluster, because they keep growing and growing. When they came to my town, every musician in the city said, "I'll never shop there." Well, SOMEBODY is... it's isn't just me.

Well put G.Jim, most of these posts are probably from folks that 'go to' the local guy but then order everything online at GC or MF because the price is so much better. I'm all for the little guy but face it there are a lot of things the little guy can't offer.

I travel for work, and if it weren't for GC I'd probably never get to practice. Some trips I pack my travel rig, but if I can't, I know I can go sit at the GC and pick all I want. I have never been hassled or badgered, in fact I have been turned on to some very cool gear that the little guys certainly aren't able to stock. No one has ever kept me from trying any amp, pedal, or instrument I was interested in trying. Same goes for Sam Ash stores.

I counted up on the map and can honestly say I've visited at least 40 Guitar Centers, probably half as many Sam Ash so I base what I say on a pretty good dose of experience. I rarely leave without buying something, even if it's something stupid and small. Hell I'm a guitar player, so even if they don't have a single thing I NEED, there's always something in that big store I can't live without.

Maybe the reason some of you are hassled is because you always go to the same store and never buy anything. Act decent and get to know someone at your local store you'll be surprised at the deals that might come your way.

^ yeah, but I also get kinda ticked when the kid at my local Dunkin' Donuts forgets within the five seconds it took me to tell him that I want cream and extra sugar in my coffee, and the time it takes him to turn around to make it.

If you needed a bassist for a gig and I told you I learned the set list but lied, and showed up and shafted you for the show I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be too happy either.

Also, no offense, but the fact that I was lied to in an effort to try and get me "in the store" and wasted my entire afternoon and a bit of money on gas makes me pretty damn PO'd. That's not professional courtesy, it's deceptive business practices.

There's a difference between being treated like a Rockstar and being treated with common courtesy. If you don't know what's on your wall, ask a manger, if he doesn't know then go look. They have hang tags for christ's sake.

Sad thing is, I had seriously considered a possible trade up and ordering one in the finish/ neck combo I wanted had I liked it. I was in the mood to buy something that day...in the end I was so ticked I left without even buying the set of Fender Strings I wanted.

If that makes me an $@! then so be it.

My local GC is just 10 mins away so I keep going back. They seem to have a difficult time finding the correct case for the guitar you just bought and almost always the case candy is missing. The sales are decent. There's a better store in Ft.L but it's farther away and the prices aren't as good.

Great Good for you 8)
The thing is I'd love for them to leave me in peace and let me have a pleasant shoping experience at the store.
And when I finally have a question, then! I would like them to tell me about it:p
And that's all I want nothin else nothin more! 8)

I don't have any trouble with that... they say hi, I say hi, they ask me if they can help, I say, nah, I'm browsing (if that's the case), they leave me alone.

I'm in the same town as Sweetwater (they only have one location) and there's probably no experience to be had that would make it worth driving. Why not just mail order and let them ship it to you overnight?

On the other hand, I haven't seen the new store. Their studio competes with me, so I buy elsewhere.

I prefer germanium, it's more toneful. More tube-like.

I'm not a fan of GC at all. But I feel that way about all "Big Box" stores. I prefer a more intimate sales environment. As for the sales staff often being less then informed...I see that at mom & pops too.

I've always believed in supporting your local business's.

What I don't like the most about GC is the way they treat their sales staff. They have a huge turnover there and for good reason. The commision system alone is enough to make anyone leave.

What the F%$^ are germanium or silicone diodes? we all have good and bad stories...guitar center, sam ash, local mom and pop...you have to know what your looking for, do a little research using the internet and then when you walk through any door, you are more focused and will see if you want or need that piece of equipment.

Heh heh, our GC has a whole wall (bout 15 feet) for just American strats, Gibson Les Paul's, Gretsch's, and even 2 Rickenbacker's that are left handed!
some times i get really nice people and sometimes I get people that wont even let me touch a used epi for $200!
