I have to say Buddy Holly. He really was the one to set the 'rock band' format.

Stood up to the label, so he recorded his own material, without it becoming part of the labels standard catalog, and assigned to its artists. Standard operating procedure back then. he also recorded with drums, which the labels were against, as it didn't happen in Nashville.

Even Elvis, arguably rocks biggest star, did material he was assigned, and recorded with the session guys the label gave him. Buddy Holly was the first to really get his way, and to give the artists any kind of control over their musical destiny.

He also crossed the racial boundaries more than any white artist of his time. He and the crickets were the first white band to play at the Apollo Theater in Harlem.

Guitar Drum Bass vocal as the standard rock group came from him. As much as hendrix was influential, nothing he did reached across all genres in rock the way Buddy Holly did. His influence is felt to this day, even by people who haven't, don't or won't listen to him.

I'm surprised SRV hasn't been mentioned here yet. So may I be the first to say...

lest we all forget :

Ike invented Rock and Roll guitar in 1951 with "Rocket 88" when he played guitar with Jackie Brenston and His Delta Cats.

Have to say the guy who played guitar on the first rock and roll song was probably a little bit influential.

Eric Clapton. I know he used gibson's up to about 1970 but he was the first guitarist to have a Fender signature model.

Hey FenderCats-

I have to say that Hendrix and SRV are the most influential Strat Players Today- But who influenced them to pick up a strat. Hendrix inspired Clapton to pick one up....and SRV

Hendrix was influenced by Buddy Guy (An Early Strat Player) and Ike Turner.

I must also agree with Buddy Holly being on the list as one of the original ...along with Dick Dale who worked with Fender in the early days in the development of the Showman Amp and the Strat.

Lots of Great Players.....still inspiring us today.

Actually Yngwie Malmsteen had the first Fender Signature model, and then Eric Claptons was introduced shortly after that...

I think Clapton signed in early 1987 and production began in early 1988 and Malsteem signed 1987 also but production began later in 1988.
If I am wrong, I'm very sorry and not trying to be mean or snotty. This was what I always had heard.

Probably Hendrix. It's kinda sad when you mention Buddy Holly, or SRV and no one knows who you're talking about. (Non-guitar players that is.)

Clapton's was first.

Malmsteen was second.

jeff Beck was the first one the custom shop approached. They built him a yellow 'reissue'. They wanted to turn it into a signature model.he vetoed the signature line, and it underwent a bit of change, and went into production as the Strat Plus.
His signature model from 91 is really close to that i think, but it could have been out years before.

Yeah, I think I got confused. I have since read that Malmsteen agreed in early 1987, and Clapton agreed in June of 1987, but yeah, Claptons was the first to be produced but Yngwie agreed to a signature model first...

True, but not quite like Hendrix. Especially amongst non-guitarplayers.
