Even though I am a Telecaster-guy, I'd have to say JIMI HENDRIX!

And I guess I am the first to day that, one minute after it was asked who would say that.....

I have to say Buddy Holly. He really was the one to set the 'rock band' format.

Stood up to the label, so he recorded his own material, without it becoming part of the labels standard catalog, and assigned to its artists. Standard operating procedure back then. he also recorded with drums, which the labels were against, as it didn't happen in Nashville.

Even Elvis, arguably rocks biggest star, did material he was assigned, and recorded with the session guys the label gave him. Buddy Holly was the first to really get his way, and to give the artists any kind of control over their musical destiny.

He also crossed the racial boundaries more than any white artist of his time. He and the crickets were the first white band to play at the Apollo Theater in Harlem.

Guitar Drum Bass vocal as the standard rock group came from him. As much as hendrix was influential, nothing he did reached across all genres in rock the way Buddy Holly did. His influence is felt to this day, even by people who haven't, don't or won't listen to him.

The guy that played with Gene Vincent, Cliff Gallup, was also someone that I think was very good and way before his time, but he played a Gretsch mostly.
