I bought a New American Standard P-Bass three weeks ago. I love the bass, the maple neck was flamed, which is rare as it is not a standard on the bass. The tint on the neck was deeper and more yellowish than normal compare to others of the same model.

After three weeks the lacquer on the maple fretboard had a small crack on the first fret connecting to the nut going down. It's about 1/4 of an inch.

The crack looks deep, but the guitar store said that it's just on the lacquer. Nevertheless, they replaced my guitar with a new one, which is great, and so far it's good.

I'm wondering where the crack came from. Is it common? What can I do to prevent that or is it just a factory defect?

Can that happen when you adjust the truss rod?

That is icky-scary but maybe a big one-off.

'Never experienced or heard of it before.

i had this on the fretboard edge around some frets. the laquer is honey colour for more vintage look. i don#t know anymore if it was exists at the buying or it was comes later.
reasons could be:
the wood was still working
the laquer has took air around some frets egdges and/or not really connected to the wood

my guitar is 12 years old so for me was and is it no problem.

good for you that your dealer has change your guitar.

cheers :D

fretboard cracks are ind of an iffy thing. sometimes they are just a crack in the lacquer. Could be several causes. But sometimes they are a manifestation of a crack in the wood, or some other major problem.

On my '66 Tele, there are little cracks on laquer, but not on the wood itself. Common, but be glad they exchanged it; especially since it's so new.

i'm no expert, but perhaps the neck was a bit twisted, and it got a crack the same way you crack a popsicle stick by twisting it on both ends.

Stinks to hear about the P-Bass. My MiM Strat (had it almost a year now!) has some spots around the 6th-4th strings on the 2nd fret where the fret spot had been scratched away and dug into. No way did I want to return the Strat though. To this day, it's the apple of my eye. And plus, I consider it a +1 on the *ehm,* dare I say, "road worn" look.

At least your dealer took care of you with the crack  Sorry, I had to say it.
