There is an interview with the late, great Roy Buchanon where he talks about getting a vintage instrument or a new instrument, and I pretty much use that as a guideline. To paraphrase what he said, it was something to the extent that while the old stuff is good, sometimes the new stuff is just as good, or better...so I'd just check it out for yourself, let your ears, hands, heart, and mind make the judgement call if you are interested, but personally I just cannot see myself paying what many people ask for vintage instruments, even if I did have the money....

Too right bowlfreshener , isnt this just a recent fad " must have a vintage,or at the very least gotta have a clapton/srv/or whoever lookalike "

I think he was alluring to customshop guitars not vintage. You couldnt pick a nice vintage up for 3 times the price of a AMSTD. 10 times the price maybe if your lucky and the seller is clueless.

seems to me nikininja that its anything thats not shiny these days has to be vintage

I have a couple vintage strats and a few new ones - I find myself playing my 1991 more than any of them - my 2008 Am. Standard is prob the worst playing strat I have to be honest

Hi asg , is it the sound,or just the way it feels, fretboard? if it was the only one you could have , would you tinker with it and and practice till you got the sound you wanted. j , '

My experience has been that every Strat (actually every guitar) has a different feel and characteristics. In other words, I wouldn't generalize and say that any guitar is better than another guitar. You've got to play as many as possible and when you find a good one, go for it.

Then, usually, as time goes by, you'll find one that you like a bit better, and so on...

Exactomundo ,otherwise why would Fender have room full of white coated head scratchers thinking how can we make this even better , when all you hear is " nuth'n plays like an oldie" , just make more oldies I'd be saying "everybody luvs em!!"

'Riding with Miami Mike on this one.

Personal preference is to adopt one which wants to be adopted by (YOU) and wear it in. That said, 'have heard of some "bought used" instruments which are so full of vibe-mojo-good juju, they are tres hip.
