It's more of an endorsement thing. We'll give you some of our guitars, but there's an understanding that you'll talk them up and/or only be seen with them (photo shoots, concerts, videos, album covers, etc).

It's not like "Hey, I'm so-an-so. Give me a free guitar!". There's a little more to it than that.

If you're a professional, have a good or marketable image, bring out the best in their guitars, and you're interested in them, sponsorship and endorsements aren't too difficult to get. The problem is when you have some kid that jumps at a Gibson endorsement, for example, then a few months later finds out that he really likes Fender or PRS better. Or that some other company wants to make a model just for him. But he can't because he HAS to use Gibbys or something like that.

Thats the way Leo did it back in the old days. Get the guitars in the hands of the guys in the public eye. My father was a local country guitar player and Leo gave him 3 guitars starting back in 52 up to 57 of coarse back then you didn't have to pay the player, just give them a guitar was all they wanted. I would guess thats not the way it works today. I am sure there is quite a bit of cash involved in the endorsment deals.

Well, Fender or Gibson are not going to just hand over a ton of free guitars to you. Anyone that would want more than a few at a time probably wouldn't get (or keep) an endorsement. If you REALLY big and a HUGE influence on selling guitars from your name, they'll throw more your way, but it certainly isn't unlimited :)

Funny how young minds things though :)

That is pretty much true. When I went to Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp, Glenn Hughes had Gibson bring him a 339 to play for the performance that night. He liked it very much and told the Gibson rep that.

I was standing there when the Gibson rep told him that since he liked it so much, Gibson would send one to his house - what color did he want.

mmm mmm mmm! now that's pretty cool. I'm sure a lot of musicians just gain a good relationship with the instrument companies, and there is mutual satisfaction:
the company gets good rep from having someone famous play their instrument, and the musicians gets a free six string!

For that matter, the fact that everyone since Buddy Holly has played Fenders may have a little something to do with why we all do too.

Get your gear into the hands of influential people so's folks'll want it. Companies have been doing that since Stanley gave Noah a free set of carpenter's tools...

Cheers - C

I agree with Ceri - marketing is the key to big business success and Fender has done a great job with that.

What can great marketing do for a company? Look at DeBeers, they start a company that takes a rock off of the ground, cut it, polish it, mount it on a hunk of gold or sliver and call it "A Girls Best Friend" or say it is "Forever" - then sell it for hundreds or tens of thousands of dollars. Its a shiny rock!!!! Now that is good marketing.................
