I once heard (only once) that the big guitar stars get their instruments for free, as a promotion and advertisement for the guitar manufacturer. Similar to the Pro Football players getting their Nike shoes for free, as a promotion to increase their sales. Is what I heard true, or just another uban legend?

Sure it's true. When a manufacturer wants to hire a "star" to endorse its product in advertisements, they have to pay the "star," right? Look how much Tiger Woods got from Buick, etc ... So in the guitar business, what's the difference to Gibson if they pay Slash with cash or with guitars?

With slash I'm sure it's all the LP's he wants and then like a million in cash.

Gibson loves slash, as slash loves their money too. lol

I dont in all realism think that the likes of beck, knopfler, clapton really worry about guitars anymore. They can have anything as long as their only seen playing their signature guitar. They wouldnt worry about cost either being loaded. If knopfler wanted to play, say a jackson RR1 he'd just ring em up and have one flew out. The manufacturer would be so delighted to have him owning one they'd likely forget to charge.

Eric Clapton was never afraid to be seen playing non-Stratocaster guitars and while I think it's possible certain select stars may get a few axes on the house I doubt if it's a standard practice at Fender. Gibson is renowned for employing unusual buisiness practices (unusual for instrument makers, not so unusual for a cut-throat lawyer firm) so I hesitate to give them the same benefit of doubt.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Yea, Les Paul can't be seen playing anything other than a Gibson. I wonder if he has a secret stash of Tele's? :D

Speaking of Gibson acting like a cut-throat lawyer firm, I found this interesting.

That is pretty much true. When I went to Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp, Glenn Hughes had Gibson bring him a 339 to play for the performance that night. He liked it very much and told the Gibson rep that.

I was standing there when the Gibson rep told him that since he liked it so much, Gibson would send one to his house - what color did he want.

Its called either an Endorsement or Sponsorship deal to the artist, and is viewed as Promotion for the company. Some companies will oftentimes have different rates for professional musicians as well, so some may not get their instruments entirely free, but are not paying full price either. And it does increase their sales...How many metal kids wanted an overdrive pedal before Zakk Wylde had his own signature one? I know a kid who bought a WAH pedal just cause it was the Dimebag one and Randall Amps just because Dime used them as well...

For that matter, the fact that everyone since Buddy Holly has played Fenders may have a little something to do with why we all do too.

Get your gear into the hands of influential people so's folks'll want it. Companies have been doing that since Stanley gave Noah a free set of carpenter's tools...

Cheers - C

I think it comes down to what they negotiate. I've heard of some artists getting discounts and others getting complimentary guitars for endorsements.
