These are all great ideas guys thanks a lot.

someone asked me about my budget, probably 400 or less.

thanks again.

You'll get a decent amp for that kind of money Jack, I had a Micro Spider for a few months. Didn't like it nearly as much as the VOX DA5, let us all know what you end up getting. Good luck with your search :D

For 369 US dollas in Metro Chicago you can have a G-Dec 30 which will enable you to do a bunch more than just parctice and make you a smiley face.

This is probably one of the best starter amps. It's got everything you need right now. You could go with a 50 watt if you wanted to though.

I still think the Marshall mg's are ok, they are various sizes, got effects, headphone socket and are a good price. Decent practice amp. :D[/quote Stay away from the Marshall MG'S. The 50 watt on up, have a cooling fan in the back that makes a grinding noise every time you turn it on. If you want a small but dependable practice amp, then I would go look on E-Bay and see if you can find a Fender Frontman 25R with the Black Metal Grill on the front. Those were made in Mexico and are much better than the Indonesian made ones that are out now.

Jeffo I've never heard that grinding noise from the back of a mg and im not a fan of them. Marshall have always given me superb after sale support, even replacing duff valves outside of warranty. Perhaps you'd do well to take it up with them and let us know your findings. If you get no response or any kind of rubbish out of them email me the details and i'll get onto them. The bletchly plants only 120 odd mile from me, I was a regular round there a few years back when i lived closer.

Hi,
I 've got a 100 watt mg that I use at home, the fan is barely audible, in fact it's about the same as the hum on my Fender Blues Deville valve.
I've had no problem, I like it.
Cheers :D

Having no problem with marshall amps is to be expected. Their not the world leader in modern amplification for nothing. The only thing i didnt like about the MG was the gain. Still i dont like the drive channel on most modern marshalls. I always prefered the clean channel wound up to breaking for drive sounds and the gain channels lowered to clean. A bit arse about face i know

A half-stack. Just kidding...Its nice to see someone asking about a decent sized amp instead of somebody asking about a halfstack to practice with in their apartment. I really like my Blackheart Killer Ant...great practice tube amp for sure, but it just depends on what sound you are looking for and/or if you have or need effects. I have heard good things about the Vox amps with the tube in the preamp section, and lots of good things about MicroCubes as well...

The G-DEC 30 is an amazing practice amp when used at it's fullest potential.

i am a beginner on day one and i am looking for the best practice amp that i will need to play at low volumes or with the headphones.

what do you pros suggest?

No headphones! Headphones are good if you want to keep the volume down around other people, other times just go with volumes it sounds soooo much better.

The best amp to practice with is the one your guitar is plugged into. Any other amp won't sound good at all, because you are not plugged into that one!!! Glad I could help!!

I use a Super Champ XD -- terrific at low volume for home but can also handle modest volume at rehearsals. The sound may be worth micing for larger gigs, depending on what you like and what PA system is available.

Some built in FX and a clean and distortion channel. I only use the clean but the distortion channel is credible from the couple of times I switched it on. The amp models are decent for a small amp, so overall I'm happy with mine. Pretty versatile if you're looking for a tube amp and it needs to be small.

The only downside is that there's no headphone jack (unlike my early 80s Champ). In my case, no problem but the XD would be out if you had to have one. Still, it sounds great even at very low volume if that will do it.
