I guess it depends on how high your budget is... An Orville or Epiphone Elitist are very high-quality Japanese-made models, and they're as close to an actual Gibson design-wise, as you can get. They'll cost between $700 and $1100, on average.

I'd also look into a Heritage H-150... nearly identical to a Les Paul, made in the old Kalamazoo factory, and only about half the price of a Gibson. Finding a dealer is the hardest part.

If your budget is lower, a lot of Epiphone players are defecting to Rondo's Agile line. They start around $300, and many are saying they're better than the Epiphones. The only disadvantage is they don't look exactly like a Gibson.

Get an Epiphone Les Paul. Great inexpensive LP.
(with a little added elbow grease that is...)

The stock pickups are junk and the pots aren't much better but the rest of the guitar is excellent. Depending on whose opinion you seek you might even find some who will say the guitars are better than Gibson LPs. There is some degree of merit to that argument. Swap out the pups and if you're so inclined the pots as well and you'll have an excellent LP for a third of the price of a Gibson. I tried the SD Pearly Gates in my Epi LP and they were pretty good but I am really happy now that I've installed DiMarzios. I splurged and bought PRS pots for it. No better pots on the market IMO.

Has anybody out there got any ideas on the best non gibson Les Paul.

It's a long story but if i bought a LP Gibson my mrs would string me up.
I want something with the sound of a LP . Any suggestions?

bro , go with the telecaster , experiment with amps and boxes that tele will make whatever sound you like .

Kinda missing the point. The original query was for the best non Gibson Les Paul.

Key words here: Les Paul

Translation: Poster wants suggestions for the best Les Paul style guitar that is non Gibson. With no other caveats present this appears to imply poster is looking for single cutaway arch top double humbucker mahogany set neck stop tail. There is no way to duplicate the sound of that type of guitar with a Tele regardless of what amps, effects or bells and whistles are used.

A Tele is certainly non Gibson but it's no Les Paul by any stretch nor should it be. A Tele is a wonderful guitar and I have two of them but to suggest one on this thread is inappropriate since the poster has stated he wants a guitar similar to a Les Paul.

Why do I come to these places?

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

bacchus are who you are looking for. They are a japaneese company, who hand make each guitar.

as they handmake each guitar, they only do small batches so you have to wait a few months for a guitar if a batch is sold out.

but generlly the cost is equal to, or less than the equivalent fender or gibson.

eg, fender am std tele is 800 euros in europe. terriffic guitar, nothing wrong with it, but it did come off a massive production line, made mainly by CNC machinery.

equivalent bacchus is the T-Standard. Handwound vintage pickups, hand made body, hand made neck. and when i say hand made, i mean hand made. each body is made, personally by an expirienced luthier. for the equivalent level of detail in a fender/gibson, you would have to go for a custom shop guitar, and well, your into many many thousands of dollars/euros/pounds then.

so a fully handmade guitar for the price of a standard production line guitar is unbelieveable to me.
check out this ebay search:

http://shop.ebay.com/items/?_nkw=bacchu ... &_osacat=0

and here's an example of one of their hand made les pauls:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Bacchus-Japan-Duke- ... .m20.l1116

Most of the folks in ireland with bacchus bought on ebay, and said the main bacchus seler on ebay is 100 % reliable.

you can view the factory and full guitar range here, although these guys are a bit pricy:

http://www.japanvintageguitars.com/Bacc ... ctory.html

these guys are much more reasonable in their pricing, but dont have as big a selection:
http://www.guitarjapan.com/bacchus/

my next guitar in a year or so will be a bacchus T-standard. yes, the fender teles are great, and id love one, but a hand crafted guitar for the same price, its a no brainer really.
