The Clapton guitar has been a better seller than the Yngwie over the years… I think the idea of the scalloped neck scares a lot of players from ever trying one out.. I think a signature guitar should have something on it that you just can’t get on a standard guitar…Pickups are an easy change; and to buy a signature ax(and pay extra) because of the pickup configuration is just stupid..at least a factory Floyd Rose makes some scenes …… after all a Strat is a strat is a strat .. no matter how you configure it….the Malmsteen signature make at least good scenes because you are not going to find a scalloped neck on any other factory guitar.. if FMIC wanted to increase their sales without having to pay famous guitarists endorsements they could simply revamp the custom shop.. Make it affordable for customers to order what they want.. order you type of wood, tuners, trem., color/finish, pickups, neck, inlays, fret board wood, whatever… Maybe we would spend a lot more time trying to be our selves instead of Clapton, Malmsteen, Murry, or Gilmour….yeah signature guitars are nice; But really!!!!! How much extra are we really getting for the 700 or more dollars we are throwing down for a name.. Just my thoughts on the subject….

The Clapton provided something which was not then available on regular production guitars at the time....a midboost circuit. It was top of the line then and ultimately evolved into three different configurations.

The Custom Shop itself, was in its infancy at the time and has since evolved to its present form. The cost factor you cite is, of course, reflective of the fact that each one of these special orders is a 'one-off' which does not take advantage of the economies of scale of the production line. The cost must reflect, in part, what it takes to pay for the services of the builders. and the additional time, effort, parts, and paint, to build the instrument. Wildwood has a stable of TK and JC built Claptons which range in the $4-5K price range, ready for purchase. If you order a Masterbuilt guitar from the CS through a dealer, you have the ability to speak directly to the luthier about any special 'tweaks' you might want in the guitar.

The Gilmour is a reproduction of a mongrel guitar. You'll not find anything like in their regular lineup and, quite honestly, was offered to us at quite a reasonable price, when you think about what's being asked for some of these relics which look nothing more like terribly damaged goods.

Different strokes. I for one am glad for all of the ranges of possibilities the company offers. There's no accounting for tastes.
