EVH, is he the best today? No. However, he most certainly is the godfather of heavy metal guitar and to understand what I mean you had to be there in 78 when someone put that record on for the first time. Simply jaw dropping and eye popping.

He is not the godfather of heavy metal. He did save guitar rock from disco though.

He is one of the most distinctive and influential players of all time and a terrific songwriter to boot. I give Edward two thumbs up plus a middle finger for sacking Sammy Hagar and Mike Anthony...

I love his tapping, it's great.
And the fact that he built his guitar for around $100, and their selling relics of it for $25000 is amazing.

Great player (I may get flamed for this) but I think he ruined Van Halen with his own ego, I think he placed blame to many times on others rather then looking in the mirror...MO

like to see how the band is with his son now playing bass

Good, but a bit of a one-trick pony for me. He may have popularised tapping (not invented as many claim or assume) but his technique has barely moved on in a quarter of a century. I can play barely a note of most Vai/Satriani etc stuff but can play along with a lot of his solos. I prefer some of his heavier rhythm work (particularly Balance).

Also, am I the only Fender player/collector who is completely under-whelmed and ambivalent about Fender's tie up with EVH? Doesn't seem to fit what I understand to be the corporate philosophy.

I've never heard him play, but since he has an endorsement at Fender, he has to be good :)
