On Tuesday, I am going to start a long series of flights to Italy with my high school choir (Kenai Central High School Concert Choir). We are going various places including Sicily, Rome, Pompeii, The Vatican (we are singing for mass in St. Peter's Basilica, the Pope should be there), etc, etc. I am also planning on buying an acoustic guitar while in Rome. I can't spend much (about 250-400). What brands/ styles/ etc should I look for? What else should I look out for? Any comments?

Also, if the rest of this post seems dry, let me reasure you... I'M EXCITED!!!!!!

(Edit) I'm back. See the 8th reply.

Ask the pope for a sub, he's loaded. If I were you i'd look to get a decent squire. Gear can be hard to come by in italy. I've only experience of northern italy (millan/alessandria) where a lot of players usually go into holland or germany to purchase. Prices are better and the selection is wider. No doubt Rome will have a decent selection, prices however may be high. Southern italy is notoriously expensive.

It sounds like a great trip anyway. Pompei, wow!! show us some pics when you get back.
About guitars, that's tricky I don't know what you might find there. Play it by ear and buy one you like and sounds good to you. You're playing it.
So cheers man, have a good time. :D

Hi mac67: Italian brands include some of those on this page:

http://www.fetishguitars.com/

And these ones (including acoustics) are pretty unusual:

Italia guitars are actually designed in the UK by Trev Wilkinson and built in Asia. But they're still worth keeping an eye out for. Retro vibe within your price range:

Singing in St Peter's will be very cool. When there, keep an eye out for Michelangelo's Pieta, inside the front door to the right. It never fails to make my wife burst into tears. See what it does for you...

Enjoy Roma! - C

Thanks guys. Don't worry, I'll have fun.

So... I'd rather get something that isn't really available over here, you know, it seems almost pointless to get a Squire.

Ceri, thanks for the tips... I looked at the Mannes and they look beautiful! If I find a good one in the price range, I'm gonna try for one. And those Italias are great looking to. I've got a friend who said he might be looking for an electric guitar. I'll be sure to show them to him.

And by the way, nobody is allowed to bring any instruments into St. Peter's Basilica except the huge organ they have in there. Dang, right?

Alright, I'm back! I had a great time.

Sadly, the pope wasn't there. Don't really know why. Busy guy he is.

Anyway, I did buy a guitar. 210 euros, which is about $300 more or less. Aria FET-ELITE. It's pretty sweet. I don't know much about Aria guitars, but I know I like mine. It's got a greenish-greyish burst. I can't post pictures because my camera got lost/stolen.

Excactly what I needed. WOOOOT!
