Believe it or not, after all these years I will start music lessons next Friday! I've always played by ear or watching someone. I'm actually going to try to learn all the scales. Unbelievable at my age but I've been wanting to read sheet music. Am I nuts or just wasting my time?

I have tons of fun with lessons (you can learn scales on youtube or justinguitar.com) try and find someone that has a good grasp on and can explain music theory. Good luck and Enjoy!

Hi fhopkins, I'm with you on this. I started one on one guitar lessons two months ago. I can read music and tabs but I needed guidance from someone who knows his stuff and I finally found one after two previous attempts. I'm 51 and I don't think it is nut neither a waste of time. Good luck fhopkins. 8)

Reading and understanding sheet music is actually pretty easy once you learn the basics. I started when I was 9. Learning theory on the other hand makes everything easier when you understand why the music is the way it is written. So I would definitly suggest a good instructor or maybe a class at your local community college.

Never thought about a college. Good Idea but I've already signed up at a local music store.
Thanks for the comment guys and gals but the wife wants the computer for a while so I'll catch up with you all in the morning. Have a good night! :)

Usually, the first lesson comes with an evaluation and the teaching is done accordingly and to the taste of the student. It is also true that there is many styles of teaching, some schools and teachers are stiffers than others, you have to take the lessons as is and they don't negociate, some are cools. As I said, since 2006 I've had three teachers and only the last one has what I need. You pay, you choose. The teacher must suit your needs. I hope that you find a competent, open minded, cool teacher. 8)

Knowledge is never a bad thing. Getting some theory behind what you already do is going to make you better no matter what anyone says. However as your learning you may find the notation music a bit boring and behind your ability. I did and ditched it, something i've had many a chance to regret many a time.

Go for it--find a good teacher, and learn theory.

Have fun.

Hi mate,
None of us ever stop learning man no matter what age and it will give you some extra tools to work with.
See it as a continuation of the long and winding road.
Hey, but have fun on the way.
Cheers pal.
