For me it was the night I saw BB King, Buddy Guy and Ray Charles about 18 years ago at the Jones Beach Theater in NY (outdoor venue) I had never heard of Buddy Guy before that night as I wasn't a big Blues fan. That changed after that night. All 3 were equally awesome in their own way. I haven't been to a ton of concerts but I have seen Frampton on the Frampton comes alive tour, He warmed up for 10 Years After (70 something), ZZ Top, ELP (3 times), Marshal tucker, Lynard Skynard, Ted Nugent and others. they were great! shows too. I was Taken back most by the show at Jones Beach. BB King is the most humble man I think I have ever seen. After his set was over he just kept thanking the crowd for coming out and was throwing guitar picks and even strings into the crowd. I think he emptied his pockets. If you ever get the chance to see him or Buddy Guy don't pass it up. You will not regret it!

The Who, November 29, 1967 at Union Catholic HS in Scotch Plains, NJ. My first concert. I was in the balcony stage right and the 4 members were as big as life and they were great. I remember that keith moon broke his snare drum and he just flipped it over his head and another re appeared or maybe it was the same one with a new skin. Then, they went busted up their instruments and PA.

Wed, 29 November 1967:
Scotch Plains, NJ, Union Catholic High School
Lineup Print Go back

Attendance: 2200

Lineup
Roger Daltrey Vocals, Harmonica
John Entwistle Vocals, Bass
Keith Moon Vocals, Drums
Pete Townshend Vocals, Guitar

Info
Nick Ruchalski sent this new date, including a pdf of a page from the school yearbook: "November 29, 1967. The gymnasium of Union Catholic High School was transformed into a 'little bit of England' with the coming of the highly successful Who Concert, featuring one of the British Isles best rock groups, the Who! The colorful musicians played to the packed house of 2200 admiring American teenagers. They belted out, to the complete approval of everyone their chart-topping hits, such as 'Pictures of lily,' 'I Can See For Miles,' and 'Happy Jack.' Then came the instrument smashing act, which fast became their trademark during their early years as a group. The English sound was only overshadowed by the thunderous American-style applause which signaled the conclusion of the tremendous show. A time to remember for all Who fans." See the attached pdf-document!

1) The Who -- 1982 the "It's Hard" tour -- Oakland arena (one of avery few smaller in-door shows they did on this stadium tour)
They opened with 'My Generation" and played for over 3 hours. Holy moly...

2) Thin Lizzy -- 1980 the "China Town" tour -- Warfield Theater, San Francisco
A dual Les Paul tour-de-force. They just smoked...

3) the Joe Perry Project -- 1982 -- the Keystone Berkeley
An unbelievable show. Very loud ... he had stacks of his custom "Aerosmith" amps (it would be interesting to get the background on those amps)

I'd have to say the Grateful Dead, Birmingham, AL. '95 (This was the best of the 3 shows I caught that year). Great set! the sound was well mixed, just an all round great show! Plus it was among the last few shows played by the jolly fat man. I actually managed to sneak a camera in for this show and got some amazing pics.

Pink Floyd - 1978 I think. Philadelphia Spectrum. The Animals/Wish You Were Here tour. Totally mind blowing. If you have ever seen Floyd in concert, you know what I mean. If you haven't, the likes of which may never be seen again. Wow!

Interesting: best live show threads generally mention The Who a lot - worst live show threads seem to name The Stones a great deal. I'd agree with both of those judgements!

My first rock concert was The Who in 1977 at the Gaumont Theater, Kilburn (North London). The second to last show Keith Moon ever played. That gig has recently come out on DVD and is a great buy for anyone who wants to see what The 'Oo were really like in their heyday.

However, even better (for me) was two years later on The Who's first tour without Moon. My buddy and I were pressed hard against the front of the stage right between Pete Townshend's monitor wedges. It was like our own private show, and despite his private life apparently crashing round his head at the time he was on absolutely top form. One of the very last outings of the wine red Les Pauls too, mixed in with the Tele-type guitars he was breaking in at the time.

And when Townshend breaks in a guitar, well...!

Cheers - C

Mine would be Pink Floyd July 1, 1994 (Canada Day!).
Myself and 4 friends rented a car and drove to Winnipeg and saw the most amazing spectical I have and will ever see! We were in 5th row on the right side. If anyone has seen the Pulse dvd, this is the tour. When they played "One of These Days" we were right under the tower that had the warthogs. That was so crazy. The lasers were amazing!
Too bad no Roger Waters but it is my most memorable concert experience.

Hi yodacaster: now I'm showing off my DVD appearances, but I'm somewhere in the audience on that Pulse DVD too! I know just where I was sitting but I've never been able to spot my face in the crowd...

I'm a little embarrassed to say so on this forum, but by far the best show I ever saw was Duran Duran in 1987 at the Deutschlandhalle in Berlin. They had just gotten back together and released the Notorious album. In addition to the band, they had a full brass section and a bunch of female backup singers. There were no seats at all--just one big dance floor with food and beer booths all around the periphery.

Through the years, I've seen great shows by Queen, Jethro Tull, Bad Company, Deep Purple, Eric Clapton and many, many others. But none of them have held a candle to Duran Duran for sheer energy and absolute entertainment.

1. Bo Diddley on his 65th birthday at the house of blues in new orleans...a friend of mine had seen him several other times and told me not to go because "he sucks live". glad i didn't listen to him...becuse bo was on fire that night...he played for two hours and played a total of nine songs...he played an extended and blistering version of who do you love. i was right in front the whole concert dancing and rocking out...at the end he extended his hand to me and the two or three other people near the front who were also rocking out and i shook his hand...and when i shook his hand i looked up and he had this huge smile on his face as if to say i am glad you had such a good time...i will never forget that show..it was awesome.

2. The grateful dead at the zoo ampitheater in oklahoma city 1981 on jerry garcia's 40th birthday. long show and seemed inspired.

3. frank zappa also at the zoo ampitheater around 1980 or 1981

4. james brown about 3 1/2 years before he passed at the doheny blues festival...incredible singer and entertainer and the tighest band.

5. the rolling stones at the hollywood bowl 2006..great show... i am sure it helps now that most of them are sober or only slightly intoxicated.

6. the neville brothers for free in a park in uptown new orleans 1997

7. the wild magnolias at the montreal jazz festival 2000...this show was a bad $@! rock and roll show.

8. radiohead at the greek theater 2006

9. wilco at the greek theater 2007 they played for 2 1/2 hours...great show.

10. the reverend horton heat with special guest lemmy...three songs during their 2007 concert at the wiltern in los angeles...lemmy and the band played a cover of route 66 and chuck berry's run rodolph run...obviously the concert was near xmas.
