Manny's Music, a fixture among the 48th St. music stores, is closing in May. If you've never been there and find yourself in NYC, you have to go there just to see the walls of photos of past customers. If they played guitar, they were past customers; that includes Hendrix, Clapton, the Beatles, etc. My son and I go there every time we're in NYC, and it's always a pleasure to hang out there. Across the street is Rudy's, home of Pensa guitars, the favored brand of Mark Knopfler, and the first place my son played a CS-336 and fell in love with that tone.

To me, once Sam Ash took it over, Manny's was already history.

I remember it back in the late 60s and throughout the 70s. That was THE guitar store of guitar stores! I saw and chatted with many a celebrity there. I honestly can't remember how many Stratocasters I bought from them over the years.

Thats heartbreakin!

I lived on the Upper West Side for a while 'bout 5 years ago in my early 20's and frequented the place often, always in awe of the photos on the wall.

I've still got a load of Manny's picks lying around.

There's footage of Guns N' Roses in there in the Paradise City video.

Manny used to say that a young kid named Hendrix would come in all the time and just play whatever Manny let him. He used to keep an old beat up Dano behind the counter and that's what they let him use to try out amps! I heard George Harrison tried to buy the old Dano from him but he would not sell it.

Doc, you need to go and take a pic before it closes with your shirt on. Beat Ceri at it! 8)
Of course all this is old Rock Rumors! You know how that goes?

Hello Mclmk8d,

Once a year in the 70's & 80's we would
make our pilgrimage to Mannny's and the
street. We played some of the best and got
a good education on guitars. We were always
treated like we were somebody. I gotta head
over for one last tour. Thanks for that link.

Cheers.

Yeah, I'll be sad to see it go. I always enjoyed it there.

Isn't that where Gilmour bought the famous black Strat?

Yes I think so. I know his parents bought him a tele first. It was his first Fender! There is a interview of him talking about this in Guitar Player Mag. Jan. 09 issue. 8) starting on page #74 :)

West 48th, between 6th and 7th Avenues.

Ed Roman is a separate entity, having nothing to do with Manny's.

Here's the link: http://mannysmusic.com/ (Or what's left of it.)

On a totally unrelated matter, I see you are from Staten Island. I was born and raised there, having moved to Jersey only 5 years ago. I'm from Dongan Hills, where are you from?
