I always say, if I had to trow out all my guitars and keep one, it would be my Martin Acoustic.

For me it depends...

If I'm working with the band, it really depends on the individual tune. If we're covering something like Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here, that really just don't sound right on an electric. On the other hand, if I'm doing the lead for Floyd's Comfortably Numb, then yea...I pretty much need to be on one of my Strats for that.

If I'm working by myself, then it really kind of depends on the situation. This last summer for example, the wife and I took the dogs down to Mohican Country for an afternoon. I didn't really feel like doing any canoeing (the shoulder was bothering me that week) so I plunked the wife and our two younger dogs down in the canoe upstream and me and our older handi-capped dog went down to the pickup spot where I sat on the river banks with my acoustic just strumming away. Likewise, I've had plenty of good acoustic jams around the ol' campfire as well.

To me, an electric is usually more for a "band" situation...just don't usually sound all that good just sitting there playing an electric on it's own. Yea, I'll sit down there in the studio with mp3's going and just jam on one of my Strats but the electric on it's own...just don't usually sound right to me. That said, I did pickup a little Roland Microcube this past summer. I've taken it up to the college a few times along with an electric...aside from being battery powered, I can plug an mp3 player loaded up with some "jam tracks" and yea...I'm pretty much a walking concert :-)

Likewise, I do have a cheapy little G. Burton Strat clone that I snagged for $40 that's really become my "grab and go" guitar. My father's been in the hospital since the end of October and it's easy to just toss her in the backseat of the van. I head down from seeing Dad for a bit to have a smoke and I can sit there and jam a little. I've even sat in the parking lot before a gig waiting for the guys to show up and will sit there on that little Burton and work some licks out and such before the show.

Also, if I've been away from guitars in general for a bit (like I was for a couple of years there with the art classes), I'll tend to get my chops up on an acoustic before switching back to an electric as I typically use a bit heavier strings on my acoustics...helps build the finger muscles and calluses back up again and I don't get all fettered down over amp tone and such.

All that aside, some days I just feel like strumming on one of my Ovations or doing some finger picking on my Seagull and some days I like to tear it up on an electric. Heck...some days I feel like playing the blue Strat and some days I feel like playing the black one...lately I've been playing the new yellow one -A LOT- just because she's new (to me at least...she's a '94)! And some days I'll be walking thru the room and just pick up whatever guitar is sitting there...sometimes I just feel like playing and it really doesn't matter on which guitar.

So again, it really just depends.

Peace,
Jim

Definitely both !

Though at my current stage of development, I have to say that my accoustics make me a better player as they are much less forgiving.

They demand much better technique to get a note to ring and not buzz. Plus a 20-fret fingerboard means you have to spread your fingers just that much more.

I am an Electric guy at heart and love my Tele and Strat. But I also am interested in playing accoustic Blues, so I practice equally with all 4.

My Epiphone AJ Dreadnought has good tone, but the large body and neck make it the most difficult to play. My Ovation super shallow back is smaller, has a neck more like an Electric, has good tone and projection, but lacks the bass of the Epi.

cheers!

Depends if I'm playing an electric part or an acoustic part.

Like em all. The sound of a nice acoustic is addicting and hypnotic. Martin is my acoustic of choice. I work stuff out on an acoustic too. My Martin Performing Artist's top is just breaking in. You can just feel the tone vibrating into your body. My electrics are nice too, just different. Acoustics make you an honest musician. No effects to use as a crutch unless of course you plug them in.

Definitely both. I'm as happy cranking a Strat through a loud amp as I am sat playing soft fingerstyle acoustic.

I like acoustics but I hardly play mine. Just every now and then.
I pick up my electrics every day.

I find that to play an acoustic, you have to be right on with the fingerboard. with an electric, you can be a bit spotty and still get the right sound. I like both and play both, which allow me to increase my ability and technique
