A Silvertone Sunburst Revolver w/ pick guard and precision pick-ups. I still have it and it looks extremely close to John Paul Jones's bass.

It must have been great the first time holding your own bass, guitar, or whatever instrument. My first instrument was a precision squier bass guitar. Its still awesome.

Well for me I sort of divide this into three things. My first guitar was a Giannini 3/4 scale nylon string classical. My parents had bought it for me from a local repair guy as an unclaimed repair for $25 when I was 4 years old. I had taken lessons for a couple of years (and did really well) but even back then I wanted an electric and I wanted to play the kind of music my older brother listened too...early Beach Boys, The Shocking Blue, The Beatles, Elvis, etc.. Unfortunately my parents wouldn't budge...it was always "maybe for your birthday" or "maybe for X-mas", etc., and they had the teacher teaching me the stuff that they wanted me to learn, not the stuff that -I- wanted to learn, so I quit...this was back in the very early 70's. Fast forward to 1983...I was 17 years old and working at my first job. The one day I pulled that old Giannini out of the closet and realized that I still knew how to play a couple of chords and since I now had my own job I could get my own electric...so I did. Now this was before I knew -anything- about electric guitars. That first electric was a Kay that I bought new for around $100...what a piece of crap!!!!! It wasn't even a "clone" of anything...it was basically a slab of wood with a pickup and a neck and strings. Seriously, after the first week or so of playing the stain started coming off the fretboard!

Now this is why I tend to divide this a bit in my own mind. My first "real" electric was a Memphis Les Paul clone that I got about 6 months later once I discovered what a real electric guitar should be like and I traded that Kay to a bud of mine for...well...another Kay. In this case though it was a decent P-Bass clone, 6 bolt neck, 7 piece alder body and '73 Fender pickups. I still have the Giannini, the Memphis and the Kay bass. While I don't play the Giannini or the Memphis that much any more (occasionally), the Kay bass is still my main bass and is a great old instrument :D.

L8r,
Jim
