Busy week ahead, appointments, HVAC adjustments tomorrow with a return from the installer to adjust and check some settings, and then a bed and headboard will arrive later this week while we wait for new bedroom furniture to come from Quebec to replace our antique adopted set.

Getting a new bed on specs is always iffy; but, it should be okay. I considered one of those fancy dancy elevated mattress ones; but, I didn’t want to get my arm caught, and I didn’t want to get tossed out or around. Another app controlled gadget was not up my alley; but, I can see where these features can be desirable. We put the money in the mattress instead. YMMV. We’ve always gone for better mattresses because of 24/7 work, and over 20 years ago, we bought into the memory foam hoopla after the waterbed (which was marketed locally with a VW Beetle parked on top) which I liked, but Mrs. FSB had other ideas.

The good - memory foam fits your body. The bad - it remembers it when and where you no longer want it, although minor improvements slow that process. Memory foam and other components are also called various confusing names intentionally, and the foam is thought to be popular because everybody uses it. Right? Well, it’s made and distributed by pretty much a monopoly that owns several of the major mattress companies who also pass it on to independent companies. I managed to limit this round’s memory foam to almost none which is darn near impossible except for variations of the same. Hmmm?

I can sleep on a rock anyhow, and I usually end up sleeping on the covers, and, perhaps, later under the covers. Not so sure how I would set timers to adjust to my ever changing comfort zone, or if I want to wake up to change settings sporadically. Besides, my latex (albeit it little latex because cost and design changes in big steps here) bed is said, like others, to control heat and cold based on materials and design. Amazing! That oughta be interesting with the many possibilities and changing moods. Still, one can spend $40,000 plus to do the same. There must be a perfect mattress at some price point. Maybe, there is, but longevity in misleading marketing is about all you get. A thousand springs instead of 400? How are those ball point pen size springs working for ya? A bed topper on a new mattress that is meant to make hot and cold adjustments as is (according to body heat), and now we cover that function, prevent it, or duplicate it? I guess that’s the point. Incidentally. Many of the original mechanics or designs used to make mattresses are still in service.

Whatever you choose, as long as you like it, and as long as you get the sleep you sought, it’s a good mattress and/or bed. Longevity can vary, and the mattress optimum performance usually expires long before one changes their mattress. I too am guilty of that. Just take the marketing with a grain of salt, and suspicion. Buyer beware. I know, because I once worked as a Springer machinist right out of school, and I made mattresses until changing jobs, long story short.

Pillows are also interesting. It’s said that quite often a hotel pillow is terrific because you are exhausted to where just about any pillow will do; however, the same pillow at home when you’re rested may surprise you with different disappointing results.
Guess I’ll sleep on it now and later. :P
Good Night dreamers.

Gary - I was mattress shopping not long ago and king-size mattresses are expensive! I ended up trying a twin-size 3" memory foam topper. I didn't expect much but I'm really happy with it. For me, buying a king-size didn't make sense. My dog never complained about her side of the bed. Plus, it was only $180 :)

That’s a good deal, Marky, Those toppers give you lots of suitable options. I layered my old mattress to fill in the divots to give us comfort and more mileage. My fussy best friend has his bed layered, and it’s one if his ever changing few passions like some are into a personal blend of coffee. King size beds are pretty big unless you absolutely have a need for one or for design purposes. I guess those deep impressions and broken springs can be avoided or spread out over time with less concentration or action in one spot. Maybe, the hotels have experience with this along with the definite marketing and pricing.

One thing I’ve discovered is that, likely because newer homes are averaging (at least here) 3,000 plus or minus square feet, and many are moving into large condos or studio suites such as those in older renovated high rises, there is a trend amongst some Gen X, millennials and Gen Z’s in King size beds. Kids are bigger today and they do stretch out more. King sizes are everywhere. Queen size is now often labelled as Queen size standard and there are different size Kings. I believe that’s planned marketing where a smaller bed can demand higher prices. Mrs. FSB likes Queen size bedding choices and that’s helpful, except it varies a lot in size being too big, too small, or just right just like the three bears.
I wish the foam was like automotive foam. Now that is beefy, but beds are geared to generally be more environmentally friendly if nothing else. I’ve been on a few couches and floors that can put me to sleep faster than an expensive bed too. Maybe, the tatami mat https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tatami and takamakura https://goodnights.rest/takamakura-japa ... sha-pillow is all one needs. More than a century ago this Nipponese rock of ages was for nobility alone.
Here’s wishing you and your doggie friend happy dreams with the topper, Marky. I’m a longtime happy camper so I dig it. :D

Thanks, Gary. My pup, Heidi, is my constant companion. She follows me everywhere and watches over me. She loves to go for rides in the desert. Her brother, Max, sleeps in my son's room. Max is awesome too except sometimes he thinks he's a lap dog and, when he jumps up on my recliner with me, his 105lbs is a bit too much. That's why I had the furniture repairman out yesterday.

Great story, Marky. Max and Heidi appear to be great companions. Never had those problems with the jumping and furniture with my small dog (not tiny, however).

Skipper would pull the bottom of the blanket and sheets out. Sometimes, I felt something crawling up to the mattress head, and then I’d find him blowing doggie breath from under my covers in the morning. I guess he was cold. I should have put mouthwash in his bowl.
I gotta crash now because it’s the last night in this bed, New one comes tomorrow. Here’s hoping it and the new pillow choice will be an improvement. Either I’ll have a great sleep night after night or a knock out sleep after a week of sleepless nights.
‘Nite all.

We’ve had a new platform bed for a few weeks, but the new mattress, not yet sampled, and the new headboard arrived this afternoon. After doing a challenging custom install on the head board to match up wth an alternative frame I’m hooped. Time to try this out.

Now I lay me down to sleep . . . I hope.
Goodnight all.

Sleep well, Gary, on your nice new bed.

Thanks, Marky.

Did pretty good for the first night. Only woke up once in the middle of the night. Gave it a workout on the back, side, and stomach. But, first impressions are . . . well, first impressions.

Even though I did my best to distance myself from memory foam, the warranty that came with the delivery mentions the understated or renamed
stuff. It went on to justify how fantastic that love and hate is to mould in, around, and under my body, and the reasons for turning the mattress, sleeping in various positions, and what else we could do to satisfy their impression downfall. No biggie, They all play the game, some better than others. Well, I did limit the amount of this material and confusion as best possible, and I chose the added latex, silk, wool, and some other unknown recycled fill to, hopefully, reduce the memory foam direct contact. Fortunately, there was no gaseous odor like some foam and/or latex can give off (like my last car when new) when first unwrapped. That was a treat; but, like much more expensive mattresses, the memory foam monopoly still has a way of presenting itself, and about the only way to avoid it is to hop into a hammock. Many prefer memory foam, and I did for a time. My guess is that most are, like I was, a first timer; although, some of it has improved, but not all. YMMV. Fortunately, this one springs back quickly for now. Time will tell.

Pretty positive for the most part. I slept well, and Mrs. FSB took to the new bed like a Linus security blanket. Looks like a keeper. Not perfect, but definitely a passing mark.
Here goes the second night of testing. As long as I’m not foaming at the mouth, I’m good to go.
Goodnight, and may your dreams be peaceful and wonderful.

- Gary Z
