www.justinguitar.com

Quite simply a brilliant website. All the online lessons are free, and there are lots of them, particularly with reference to scales.

The two mentioned so far justinguitar is good,!
So are rockingoodpeople but trying to listen to them they get on my nerves too fast :)

This one is a list of links to other useful sites for beginners
http://mashable.com/2008/03/02/learn-guitar-online/

Don't overlook http://steviesnacks.com , though that may be a bit advanced for someone starting out. Some lessons from him are available on youtube and as itunes podcasts. (there are quite a few free guitar lessons on itunes podcasts !)

Web sites and books/dvd's can help you learn but I recommend taking at least a few lessons from a qualified teacher. Can save you a lot of anguish trying to unlearn bad habits that could have been caught and avoided right at the start.
