I'm just wondering guys - I'm sure every Guitarist has wondered and sorry if this post has been done before - I had a quick check.

But what if Hendrix was still alive?

What kind of status would he have today? Would in the same category as... say, Clapton, or would he be a little higher (arguably) like BB King, or do you reckon he'd be even bigger than that?? Like, untouchable?

It can be said a lot of his legend only stands where it is because of his untimely death (god rest his soul), so I wonder if he'd still have the same status as he has now?

He was a pioneer of the Guitar and I think every Guitarist has been influenced by him, probably everyone in the whole world (exaggeration) knows about him.

I don't know - what do you think?

Be interesting to hear from you?!

E.D.

good question. i guess he would have the pionier status also. with grey hair.
maybe he wouldn't burn his guitars today. maybe he would have some ups and down from the past till today but he was a great songwriter. i could imagine that he would publish the one and another album and touring more or less over the world.
or blues festivals with all pioniers and youngsters like the crossroads festival would be a great happening.

cheers

:D

If Jimi Hendrix were alive today, he would have gone through all the same stuff as any other guitar 'god'... a couple new bands, a stint as a sideman in a friend's band, a radical change in direction, a whole lot of fans saying he'd lost his "edge," a handful of superfans defending his every move, a couple of marriages, a kid, some scandal. some awards, surprise appearances on TV shows you'd never expect, and finally, a cushy gig at the new Las Vegas hotel "Frisco," where he'd do two shows a night in a Summer-of-Love themed theater called The Fillmore Room. 55 year old guys would pay $250 a ticket to watch him grind out a 45 minute show with production values that rival Celine Dion's.

To me, there would be no legend if the untimely death did not occur. I think this is true of both individual artist as well as the collective band. The one exception might be the Beatles, but even then, if the collective band did not meet it's demise, how would they be thought of? Again they may be the exception, but maybe not. If you think about it, the only bands or individual artist that are legends are ones that ended while in their prime.

Metallica, in my opinion, would be a metal legend if they had stopped no later than their black album. Now, you have fans divided, some hate them, some still love them. There is no longer universal love for them.

i think as most of us, that most of his aura comes from, what would he become? would he go further higher? and there's the beauty we lost him at a very high peak, and no we dream. i think he would have gone somewhat further, and now he would be a little like jimi page, only being himself

8) thread!

"Chitlin circuit" is a term for a particular route through Southern roadhouses, many if not all of them owned by African-Americans, where bluesmen and R&B figures cut their teeth.

Just for future reference, it doesn't exist anymore. Probably the closest thing to what you're describing is the hideous string of "RibFests" throughout the US that are "keepin' the blues alive."

If Hendrix was alive today, he'd be pounding on the inside of his coffin, yelling, "Let me out!"

Hendrix the songwriter was incredibly prolific. It is astonishing how much music he produced in such a short career. All we can really say for sure is that Hendrix would have experimented and stretched all kinds of boundaries that would have challenged the listener. He acheived "guitar god" status in a few short years. If he would have continued the music and created some epic enduring classics, the stage was set for him to be the best ever.

Interesting possibility.

'Tend to agree with the folks who would grant him 'elder statesman' status with BB, Eric, Buddy, Keef...

...if he survived the 'recreational chemical' effects and maintained his faculties and musical abilities.

Seriously, if Hendrix was still alive and well today, there would be many well known players of today who would never have had a professional career. Without naming names, we all know that there are plenty of celebrities out there who have mimicked Hendrix's style to varying degrees (as Hendrix truly cannot be duplicated). This ilk has thrown their own spin on it so to call it their own and made a lucrative career out of it.

As Hendrix was truly the innovator of electric guitar in the 60s, I can't even imagine the kind of stuff he would have come up with over the decades right through today. His was a tragic loss. At least I can say I got to seem him live. (Yes, I'm that old!)

Just my opinion here but personally I think all of these "what if's" are completely pointless. "If" the guy had of lived, yea, he could very well still be of the legendary status of someone like Clapton. On the other hand he also could have taken a hit of some really bad acid and ended up like Sid Barrett and/or completely faded into total obscurity...maybe he'd be making organic iced tea now instead. You could ask the same question about Stevie Ray Vaugn..."what if?". Of course, what if Eddie Van Halen had of died at the height of his career...would he be a "legend" instead of "that old guy that used to play with David Lee Roth"? Does it even really matter at all? Would you enjoy any of those great Hendix tunes any less if he were still alive today?

The answer is that no one knows and short of inventing time travel and going back and changing the past, no one will ever know....it's as simple as that. Hendrix made some great music...enjoy it for what it is.

I was a big fan of his 60's and 70's stuff. I didnt like what he did much in the 80's and 90's but since then that he has been clean he came out with a couple of good albums.

Seriously though, I wonder that myself at times. Damn, he'd be older than my parents. I cant imagine an old looking Hendrix. Does someone have access to some kind of forensic graphic software to that we can render one?
