I would think myself foolish not to listen to those that have more experience and exposure to guitars and guitar related stuff. There are a select few whose opinions I would accept as near gospel, some of those people are here on the forum. Does that mean I'd rush out and blindly try any product just cause they like it? maybe! but most times not.

the great thing about getting a 2nd opinion is that you may be turned on to a product or process that would have otherwise gone unnoticed.

Anyone who imagines that any opinion is formed without outside influence from other humans is kidding themselves.

'Have a long practice of researching the daylights out of the subject, looking, pondering, listening, visiting, touching...repeatedly...sometimes for a decade...before buying. Then when in the right place at the right time and the instrument calls and the vibe is there...out comes the chequebook. No hesitation.

'Will listen to informed people re things like reliability (especially amps) but usually purchases are mattersof "well-planned love." Which has worked out really well for this picker, over the decades.

In the final analysis though I trust no ones ears more than my own. That will be the decider when I actually buy. But a friends advice might make me more diligent. Or I may pick up a guitar that I normally might not have payed attention to.

The decider for me--more than my ears--is how it feels. That can't be changed--the pickups can be.

BUT how it sounds is still very important. Before you plug it in--play it unplugged--if you don't like the sound--try another one. If it sounds great unplugged, but not plugged in--the pickups can be changed--the electronics can be changed. If a guitar is the greatest sounding guitar ever to me, but I don't like the feel--I won't get it.
I guess a better way to phrase would have been: in the final analysis, i trust no one's judgment better than my own. i agree, feel is a big part. Though there is more to the tone than just the pick ups, if a guitar feels bad, or if I just don't like its character tonewise i won't get it. But I think we all agree, other people can help educate you, but in the end, you have to trust what you like.

Oh, I agree with your point--just adding clarification--I just realized how that may have come across.
