This is pretty much a face value question. I'm specifically talking about, say if you were buying a new Fender guitar. As for me, I'll listen to educated opinions, but the decision is ultimately up to me alone. Discuss!

Anything i buy has to fit my requirements before anything else. I do however heed advice on prospective purchases. Theres just no sense in not hearing someone out. Even after a bashing i will still go and try the said piece. To see if any problem is something i cant get around. Guitar magazines have proved themselves useless in the review department. Theres no chance that they will give a bad bit of kit a honest review when the manufacturer buys expensive advertizing space in the same mag. The CD demo's are junk too often so over processed and mixed that you cant hear the instrument/amp/pedal. I'd much prefer a guitar/pedal into a pignose or marshall ms2. Or if the review is a amp lets hear a encore or cheap squire into that amp. Without the usual extensive ammount of processing, eq'ing and mike placement tricks.

I always do alot of research before I purchase anything, especially my guitars. I listen to everyones opinions but ultimately it's down to what I want and need.

There are alot of very experienced musicians on this forum who knows what they are talking about and we are lucky to have such talented people in one place where we can go and find answers to questions we may have.

That being said we all have different opinions on what's the best and take them for what they are, but in the end it's all about what fits you.

Once I go on the hunt, I'm pretty sure I know just what I want. I will throw stuff out there on this forum for feedback, but like most of you, it all boils down to what I've zeroed in on. This forum is great for garnering info. Love it!! 8) Mike

I'll usually listen to what someone has to say, but I won't make a purchase until I try out the gear myself.

I like to hear other people's opinion on guitars but ultimately my decision is based on how well a guitar feels and plays in my hands. I also try to play on "like" equipment as what I have at home to see how it would sound. Lately that has been hard because my amp is an older model and sounds differently than some of the new ones of the same brand.

To a point. People give me ideas on stuff to try out.
But it comes down to having the gear in hand before I decide.

I bought a Ripper straight from Gibson untried in '77, but it was to replace a stolen EB-3.
Bought a used GK offa EBay a couple years ago, but I had used a couple on backlines before so I knew basically what I was getting.

Everything else I had a chance to sit and play before deciding.

I love to hear (and fully respect) others opinions on things. I mean, it's just more information and information is good - the more the better. If, when I make up my own mind, it's different from theirs, I think, "They are not thinking right." It's more than that, though because they ARE thinking right - for them! Just not for me!

My opinion is still the only one that counts for me. Sometimes I can learn something from someone else and change my opinion because of it. That's still valid - and it's still MY opinion. Selfish you say? Of course - we all only have one self and you have to be true to yourself.

I always enjoy listening to what others have to say about guitars, sometimes I even learn things.
When it comes down to buying a guitar I usually know what I'm looking for based on knowledge I have learned over the years. The final deciding factor is if the guitar talks to me when I play it.

Hi Martian: pretty much like most others are saying. I'm hungry for others' ideas, which I then use to make up my own mind. The number of times I've walked into a guitar shop thinking I'm after a particular product based on an opinion or review, only to find it's a different kettle of fish in reality.

A few examples of where others on this Forum have influenced me just recently. I'd long ago decided the modern C-shape neck was the one for me and stopped thinking about it at all. Over the last year or so I've read several people, particularly some posts by ZZDoc, on the subject of V necks. Kinda mulled it over, went and tried a few and now I've come back that type of neck to a degree. Not instead of but as an occasional variation to my C necks. Extra string to the bow.

Several other such. Ones I haven't acted upon but plan to: Nikininja on Earvana nuts has inspired me to try one of those out sooner or later (though with some misgivings - will all my other guitars sound disappointing from then on?). And you, Martian, drew to my attention that I really don't know anything about DiMarzio pickups. Maybe that matters and maybe it don't: but there's investigation to be done.

If I turn out to love 'em I shall post plenty of credit to you. If not: no matter.

Most animals can learn from their own experience. Humans are the only one that can learn from the experience of others. (That's a deeply questionable statement to anyone who knows about chimps, gorillas and my cats. But it sounded good.)

Cheers - C

Part of any guitar buying experience is to ask, observe, listen, touch, play, discuss, etc.

It is now fun for me if others aren't involved.............

I read a lot, listen a lot and do as much research as I can when I am thinking of buying something. I love to read reviews, because it will give me an idea if that product is something I might be interested in. If I do get interested, I'll check out a website to price and availability. I will also read the buyers ratings for that specific equipment. Then it's off to the guitar store to check it out personally. If I like it, I'll check ebay to see about getting it cheaper. A lot of my purchases are emotional, like a Rosewood Tele, Casino or Rickenbacker 325. I felt I had to have the Beatles Guitars. I bought them all and sold them too. Even my Martin's are emotional in the sense of choosing what model I want to own. The most recent equipment quest is for a Gibson ES 339. The manager of one of the GC's recommended it to me. I played it a few weeks later at a different store and it felt and sounded great. It is going to be a must have. I may have to sell something, but that will be ok. It may replace my Clapton Strat, which would be ok, because it is able to generate similiar tones. Then again, if my Clapton can do the same job, why get something to replace it if I already have it. The never ending battle in my mind as it fights GAS!

You'd be foolish to ignore advice from a knowledgeable source, but you should still make the final call.

Listen to advice, then decide whether to take it, ignore it, or to modify it.

That's also a good point of forums like this one--you get access to more people for that advice.

But as I said-ultimately it is your call. We all have different sizes & shapes, so while I may find a neck to be good, or a guitar comfortable--you may not--but if you at least try it or consider it--you know it isn't for you.
