A Starcaster is a nice but very much a beginner's instrument. Very much so. The only thing in common between a Starcaster and a real Stratocaster is the look. The upgrade from a Starcaster is the "Squier" brand (Fender's low-cost alternative). Squier makes a nice Strat "Standard" that is a much better than a Starcaster and a real nice little guitar for a beginner. The entry-level made-in-mexico (MIM) Fender Stratocasters sell new for over $500 (the prices just recently went up). However, your best bet is buying a used MIM Strat for less than $300 off of Craigslist. Further, the used prices will only be going up from there, so you will be able to get your money back if you sell it (and it is a true "Fender Stratocaster").

Thanks, I think I'm going to get something called the "Fender Stop Dreaming Start Playing Pack." It is 200$ and containes a fender strat, tuner, 3 nice guitar picks, instructional dvd and a basic amplifier. Does that sound like a good deal?

Either that or the Starcaster pack. I had a starcaster. Loved it. Great quality. It was so good, that my next guitar was my American Standard. Both packs come with pretty much the same stuff. Good luck! :D

I got my Starcaster for $50 on eBay as a project guitar. Replaced pickups and all new wiring. It is great sounding guitar now that stays in tune. I get a lot of compliments on it.

In this opinion, one of the most important things a beginner can do is get a decent instrument which excites them...

...then get a top-notch setup to make it and you play as well as you can.

Then play that electric guitar ("Mr. Zoot Horn Rollo" as Captain Beefheart told Bill Harkelroad)

Hey StratHeads-

I bought my 12 yr old son the "Starcaster Kit" and I must say I am very pleased with it- The pick-ups are sub standard but the guitar feels very solid- Pick-ups are an easy Mod so if he stays with it I will upgrade his pickups. The little Amp that comes with it is also weak....but that can only be fixed by buying a quality amp- Even Squire Kits come with a weak Amp.

All in All it is a nice package at a great price.
