I love iron maiden but I don't see why they have all those demonic cover art because they arn't as heavy as their cover art suggests.

Yes I know the demon thing is called Eddi!

Well the cover art dates back to the dawn of the '80s when Maiden had their previous singer (Paul Diamo I think?). Back then, Maiden was deemed to be very heavy. Keep in mind, this was all pre-Slayer, pre-Venom, pre-Metallica, etc.

I remember an interview with Dave Murray not long after "Number of the Beast". He said the Eddie caracture was all a bit silly and cartoonish, and that Eddie would likely see only one more album cover. Well .. 56 album covers later, you see how that ended up.

Y'all don't be dissin Eddie the 'ead!!!!!!!!

Derek Riggs is frikkin' awesome. Greatest album artwork ever. +1 to the point that at the time, Maiden WAS the hardest rocking band out there. Remember that there ws no internet at the time. A lot of the really obscure death/thrash/whateverthecoolkidscallitthesedays metal bands were just small adds in the back of Circus magazine. You had to get on the radio to get famous.

I had nightmares from the first few Maiden LP covers, and Kiss posters, as a little kid. My brother was way into that stuff. The artwork on Somewhere In Time is fantastic.

Iron Maiden (Derek Riggs) made their point with Eddie. They wanted attention paid towards their albums and they got it! They knew their music was good so they hired an original artist to capture the "blood and guts" concept they were after.

I say it was an excellent marketing vehicle whether it was silly and cartoonish (which I absolutely agree), but it was a brilliant business stroke, and their continued use of their 'mascot' in their album artwork thereafter is an excellent lesson in 'what ain't broke - don't fix'; and going with a formula that worked for them!

I used to stare at album covers for hours while listening to music through a set of cans beginning in 1980 or so and I absolutely miss that feeling of bringing home a new album cover to stare into while listening to its soundtrack! Derek Riggs's work is undeniable. You can recognize his work anywhere - even away from Iron Maiden. The first time I saw a billboard promoting (in L.A.) Knotts Scary Farm with a scary-looking demon on the front, I immediately recognized those brush strokes!

In my opinion, I don't think Eddie was supposed to represent heaviness; it was just an eye-catching piece of work that represented what Maiden wanted to represent!

Up the Irons!
